.mkv?

I recently got some anime from... elsewhere <.< >.> but its a .mkv file. I dont have any programs that will open this file. (divx/wmp/quicktime) does anyone know of a program that will play this type of file?
(If no one knows or the question is somehow in violation of the forum rules.. just lock it.)

Well this hasnt been locked so I'll let you know. This is a Matroska file, which is a container like .avi, at least, that is how it was explained to me. You can find information and I believe some relevant codecs here... http://www.matroska.org/ .

my divx plays .avis but I guess its not close enough, just the idea of the file is similar. I hope one the codecs work!

mkv is a container file, like .AVI, but structured like a DVD (from what I can tell when I had to extract one). You need the Matroska pack in order to play mkv file... so it will work.

well, mostly of the time, matroska files has different video and audio options, like changing subtitles and the translation of the anime/movie....you can play it with Windows Media Player, DivX, Real Player, VCL and Quick Time

, but first you'll need the codecs for it....i have them <.< >.>

Matroska? My god man.... are you telling me that you guys have never heard of the CCCP multimedia codec? *Shakes head in disbelief*

Download it, it contains most of the required codecs for many common media types, including the matroska codecs required for sound, subtitles, and video.

And while you're at it, download media player classic. It's a fairly simple media player, with no bells and whistles or anything, but it plays a wide array of media types and is VERY easy to use. Plus, it doesn't really need to be updated every freakin month or so.

The media player should be easy to find, but I'm not going to post any links because I don't know if the mods would find anything that goes against the rules on the posted site. The cccp page however, only contains the codec.

Good post, but a couple of things.

CCCP is not a codec, or a codec pack (it's called codec pack because it fits the CCCP acronym). In reality it only installs FFDShow which handles video decoding, and Haali's media splitter which enables players to understand the MKV and MP4 format.

Also media player classic is included in the CCCP installation, as well as a choice of BSPlayer (mpc is much more preferred though)
