It's been a while since I registered, but I remember we had to click a confirmation email. I'm guessing that's something that bots can automate now?
What about having a picture with numbers on it when you register so a human person has to look and type in what they see? I've seen this used on a lot of sites to avoid auto-registrations. It seems to work for them. To avoid those that have already registered, you could even use a version of the box when people sign in so only living people can access their accounts.
Any other simple little anti-spambot tricks would substitute, but I think we should do *something*. I don't like the idea that they can join and lurk and have free reign to do whatever they want when the mods are sleeping.
We have noticed they only post when the mods are absent, right?

The common argument against those "captchas" is that they prevent the blind or otherwise sight-impaired from being able to access the site. Seeing as sight is pretty much a requirement to enjoy AMVs, I suppose this isn't an issue here.
Another issue is that some of them are so downright horrible that even an intelligent, well-sighted person can't figure out what the characters are.
Also, many captcha schemes have been cracked and so bots can still bypass them.
If the org can find an easy to read, and yet uncracked captcha, I say bring it on.

Actually, the PHPBB captchas are pretty easy to read

well...after some quick searching I managed to find some relatively good info
http://www.wait-till-i.com/index.php?p=203
article is fairly recent, after searching through the source I found the latest date to be 12/13/05
so it sounds like esp-text or esp-pix would be the way to go.
(might make yoko sweat a little bit...good thing it's only used for registration)
