How do I know if my speaker has gone bad? I mean, physically know.
On a side note, the other day my powerstrip turned off for no reason, and I couldn't get it to reset and turn back on. After fiddling with various wires, it suddenly came back to life. THe next day it died again, taking my computer (and a major graphics project) with it. Again, it wouldn't come back on until I fiddled.
I wonder if my powerstrip is going haywire, sending unhealthy doses of electricity to my computer, which shrieks in pain.

The speaker itself wouldn't be the problem, it will only make sounds if a signal is applied to it. You can just unplug it, it only gives the post beeps and sounds from the modem, if you use one. The power strip must have a circuit breaker. These work by heat generated when there is to much current flow. After a few minutes the breaker cools and can be reset. You either have to many things drawing on that strip, (usually 15 amps will run a lot of electronic equipment,) something is shorting and drawing a lot of current, or the breaker in the strip is going bad. Using an amp meter to check the current would be nice, but the meters are quite expensive. I'd try a different strip and possibly using more than one strip if there is a lot of load. If it still blows the breaker you have something shorting out, possibly your power supply.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
