Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

AMV virgin no more -- xxxHOLiC!

Post by shpongles » Sun Mar 12, 2006 10:16 pm

So I was looking around the forums and figured I'd shamelessly promote myself!
It's my very first AMV, so... yeah.... Made with good ole WMM. :|

Around the World in a Midsummer Tea Daze
Anime: xxxHOLiC - Manatsu no Yoru no Yume
Music: Shpongle (I guess I'm the first to use Shpongle in an AMV here hmmm)

It might seem slow, it might be messy and out of sync. But it's my first time, so no hate mail! :D
I don't mind criticism though, my hardware is however limited. -_-

Doh, if this is the wrong forum, I hate to ask someone to move it.
I'd delete and remake the thrad myself but apparently that's not allowed :?

1) Divx logo should be turned off
2) I think I understood the concept behind the transition around ~1:29, but pixelated blurring out didn't really work.
3) Better compression is possible.

Great trailer for xxxHolic, I was thinking about getting it and now definitely would. I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended to be, but, I'm not quite sure on what to comment on. You matched the mood to the various parts of the song well, which is a good step in the right direction, better than a simple cut or something every beat, but I think there should have been.... more? I liked the video, and really enjoyed the music, I hope more of it will be used some time down the road. I would suggest getting a better editing program, if not something like Premiere then maybe one of the cheaper ones.

Beyond that, nothing really comes to mind that stands out as something obvious to correct. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Really, thank you lots for that input. I'm much obliged

I am pretty aware how amateur-looking it is, I really wish I had the knowledge & utilities to take my ideas and create a seamless AMV.

I'm not sure why the Divx watermark randomly showed, it might have been when I was encoding from a MKV to AVI. I dunno.

About having "more" variation/layers/scene-cuts... I really wanted to, but the more video slices I put into the WMM timeline, the more problems arose. If that weren't the case I would have loved to cram more scenes into it, there really was a lot of "wasted" space.

Right now my PC is broken, so I'm stuck on a laptop. Hopefully sometime in the future I'll test out a higher-level video editing program, preferably something that has an easy learning curve.

Btw, what do you mean by better compression? Like the video:size ratio? I see AMVs above 80MB all the time.
Thanks again, you've helped me plenty! It's truly difficult to critique your own work.

I wish they would learn to compress too, there is very rarely a reason to have a file that big, even with dsl it takes a good while to download. I would suggest reading this, especially this. Avisynth and Vdubmod, beyond just giving better compression can allow for some neat effects, especially if your just working with WMM. I'm pretty sure there's a guide and maybe plugin for layers and such somewhere on the site for WMM. If I come across it again I'll send you the link.

One thing when I made that first comment on size, is that I didn't think about how long the video was. Nearly 7 minutes, and for me it didn't drag on, indeed, it seemed kinda short. Easy to listen to, a new intriguing anime I haven't seen before, it really drew me in. Considering its length, compression between time and quality was actually seemed pretty good.

Personally I found premiere to have a sloped learning curve, but not too bad, which is far more than I can say for After Effects, though that's not really intended to be your main editing program. It may be worthwhile to take a look at this list of software.

Your own work is easy to critique, its hard to critique well.

LMAO you say that when Fluxy's video right there is 70megs ;p

The one thing I wish 'they' would do is not TELL on us to big lawyers and junk ;p.

Oh a one stop shop for all your mkv compression I'd recently found is... well something with 'anime' in it's name I got it from doom9.net. It basically was made for fansubbers and situations like this aka the name 'anime' whatever.

Well Orwell is correct though, as you probly already know, one should read the guides. I just spit out my dinner when he said 'it is, but no one's paying attention to you!!' lol. This is the right place to announce, but not the right place to learn (see help forums, or even ask there, some ppl get their kicks by helping others -_- really.... weird), not really the right place to request ops either (see op exchange).

When I was noo I REALLY hated specific forums too...
