The video information - worth the time or not?

Post by -GfN- » Tue Mar 14, 2006 1:22 pm

Konnichiwa,
since there are so many yes/no - why -threads I wanted to submit another one :o

I was wondering about the way people deal with the video information:
Do they actually write it, do they write down much? things like that.

the second question is, whether you really read them before or while downloading or just skip it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My personal opinion is that a video info is definitely neccessary, since one did spent so much time into making the amv. moreover, it's interesting.

concerning the matter of the second question I would say, that people should read it. if they give a comment or even an op, they HAVE to read it...otherwise they wouldn't be qualified to judge the originality category.

This one's easy.

Heres what I do:

I download it.
I watch it.
I read the video info after.

Why? So that I can see if what they made had the effect that they really wanted. I get whatever emotion/idea/awe out of the video intially then i go back and read to see if thats what they meant to do.

Methinks a good AMV is something that needs no explaination. You watch it, you know what its about and you know the message conveyed.

Unfortunately, not all AMVs are "good" (read: previous definition of good) and some pretty much require an explaination.

Well I think that video information are quite important. They offer the viewer a possibilty to understand the video better (well, if that'S necessary). This goes for a lot of my videos and for Good's as well. I noticed that as I gave him an op. I think they are necessary, at least in cases of some videos.

I always write up video information. By then, I've invested a couple months of my time in a project, so what's another hour or so writing up a description ?
As for reading them, I'll usually scan the info before I watch it, to get a feel of what kind of video it is. Sure, we have the categories, but there can always be multiple combinations of genres. Also, it's nice to know ahead of time what aspect of the anime's plot the video focuses on (if there is a central focus).
Videos with no information rarely get my attention. Maybe if the anime/song combination is of particular interest, but even then I check the creator's other scores to see what to expect. It just makes a better overall impression if there's a well thought-out description to accompany the video.

I perfer people who write video explinations, i assume one without is going to be crappy as most ive seen without ended up crappy...

unfortunately i usually dont read video explinations unless i am going to give an opinion... QCs from me take so little time theres no point in reading it... (and almost every amv i download gets a qc just after i watch it)

I perfer to write my explinations or whatever incase someone wants to read it... if they dont want to read it then thats their decision, but i wouldnt want to "rob" them of not getting something if they want something..

I dont go into as much "detail" as some (ive seen descriptions/explinations that go on for 2-3 pages O.o) but I do write a few paragraphs usually dealing with thanking betas, and what i was thinking making it... most of my amvs are pretty self explanitory... though a couple of them sometimes require a bit of extra.

Writing something on the order of a page or so isn't that big of a deal especialy when you consider how much time went in to the making of the video itself. It's also a good place to keep records of con results and to give thanks to anyone who helped you.

Vid descriptions are a must for me. When I see a vid without a description or a one liner it just tells me that the creator really didn't have the interest in their project to put one...(unless they're foreign and don't know a word of english). Vid descriptions serve the purpose of offering up the creator's input on the concept and making of the AMV. Most of the time I find it very interesting and amusing to hear what kind of ideas and dilemmas the creator had during the editing process.

After I'm interested in a vid I usually read the description while it downloads.

Well, I certainly enjoy reading inthesto's video descriptions, since they increasingly have absolutely nothing to do with the video that they're attached to.

Everyone else's, though...well, I dunno.

I see the vid description as the place to tell potential viewers what the video is about. If the anime/song combo says it all, I probably don't want to watch the video (unless it's comedy). For example, a video with action for a category and without a description is clearly random and pointless because the creator had nothing to say to describe it. Even if I'm in the mood for random pointless action, I'll look for a video where something - the editing, the song, the anime, anything - was interesting enough that the creator had a few words to contribute to describe his work. A blank vid description means the video is nothing but a certain random anime matched with a certain random song (because if there were any meaning to the match, that would be at least one sentence for the creator to write about his video).

It's like the inside flap of a book (or the back for paperbacks). Unless the title, song/anime match, or the creator are so special they sell the vid you need to add a little description so people know what it's about and whether or not they want to get it. There are only a few creators here who are 'special' enough to sell me a video without bothering to tell me what it's about first. As a viewer, I want to know what I'm getting myself into before I download.

On the other side, I use descriptions as a way to warn people away from my videos since my vids are rarely *just* the anime/song match. I use key words so those viewers who like my 'genre' of vids will be able to find them, and I use sometime-excessive warnings so the rest know better than to waste their time. If I didn't tell what my vids are about, they'd get mixed in with the rest - leaving me with more flames and fewer like-minded viewers. I don't think I'd bother to share my vids here if I couldn't describe them.

I also use the descriptions as a record of the problems/fun that went into the project, but that's just because I'm too lazy to keep a or refer to an accurate journal.
