instead of watching the fansub, wait for a HQ DVD release

Post by x_rex30 » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:10 am

I notice a lot of people can't seem to wait when it comes to anime releases.. the second anime comes out they're out to download the latest fansub.. a few series I want to have the highest quality possible version before I watch it so I wait for the DVD release.. this is what I'm doing with bleach and what I have done to a lot of series like Elfen Lied. So anyone like me where they would wait for the DVD release because they wanted to enjoy it for the first time in high quality? I have done this quite a lot but still every once in a while I'll go ahead and get the fansub(just as an extra note, a big problem with this is that all the AMVs that come out using new series/movies are often avoided by me because I'm afraid of spoilers)

Anyways.. any of you the same way? I'd like to know I'm not the only one to do this.. just wondering if anyone has the opportunity to watch a new series through fansub but avoid it because they wanna wait for the better quality DVD version of it. :)

If I know it's a pretty safe bet it will be licensed (like, say, Hellsing Ultimate or Bleach) then I'll wait for the domestics if possible...

However, there's some series where, the way US licensing works, I just don't want to put my hopes on something that's going to remain a faint might (which is why I was VERY relieved the day I saw someone was finally giving Round Vernian Vifam a proper subbing treatment...you couldn't even find that in HKs...)

So it kind of depends...if I know there will be a higher quality copy, I'll wait... (...in most cases...I kind of buckled with Zeta Gundam: A New Translation...one part curiosity, one part the fact Bandai's been dragging its feet on Gundam lately since it hasn't been selling as well as they were hoping for it to.)
However, if its US release prospects are slim to nil (i.e. most series made before...ballpark 1995 at oldest) I'll just bite the bullet and go for the subs.

Is there any particular reason you wait for a dvd release beyond just wanting better quality? With some of the releases I've seen lately in fansubs, the quality is pretty good, nothing that screams this is wrong. Waiting for DVD's for a amv makes sense, since recompressing it again and again is going to make for a poor quality release, but to wait for better quality just to watch it means I would probably only watch a few series a year, or even two, like the case with elfen lied. If I hadn't seen the fansubs there's no way I would have picked it up. I did buy it since I intend to make an amv with it, and the higher quality is nice, but it doesn't really add anything that isn't in the fansub.

I watch hundreds of fansubs.. sometimes I came in kinda late(like with elfen lied) found out it was coming to the US soon.. after watching the first two episodes I knew I already was in love with the series so I waited for the DVD.. was about to go ahead with the series but I'm glad I waited.. the DVD is 120% better in quality. It looks soo nice I was going to wait for the rest of the series to come out on DVD and I'm glade I did..

JUST LOOK AT THIS!!!!

It's a lot better.

Yes they do a good job with the quality lately but I still get dissatisfied. I have all of bleach downloaded but I am very upset with the quality with it.. it's messing up the experience so even though I have all the episodes.. knowing is licensed I am waiting.

I am not one of those fanatics that have to get things the second it comes out.. I have a thing called patience and I don't take pride being one of the people to be the first of things.. I don't care to have gotten the xbox 360 on the first day, I don't care if I was there the first day star wars episode 3 came out.. I have patients and I like quality.. I have plenty of series I don't mind watching the fansubs of but a lot is just worth the wait IMO.. I've got hundreds of games I haven't played.. plenty of DVDs I haven't watched.. girls I haven't laid so I think I can stay occupied if I don't go ahead with fansubs that are coming in the US. sometimes you don't know if it's coming to the US and sometimes you've waited to long that you just say screw it and watch the fansubs but like I said I have patience and I could wait.. the only real big problem I have from waiting is I miss out on a lot of AMVs using new anime because I'm afraid of spoilers.. a lot of advent children AMVs I wanna see but I'm still waiting for the freekin' DVD to come out and that I am getting sick of waiting for. I'm about to go ahead and watch the fansub that I downloaded cause I am getting very impatient with that one.

I'd never wait to watch something. Using it as footage is another issue entirely, though. Although, if i'm planning on making a new AMV anytime soon with a series that has several seasons and hasn't been officially liscensed (like, say, Bleach), i'm not going to wait 2 to 3 years for a domestic release of all the episodes i'd need. Having patience only goes so far... waiting 3 years is essentially the same as abandoning an idea because you're too lazy or cheep to buy the R2s.

Digisub ideal:

Try before you buy.

If it sucks, delete, if not, keep it, wait till it's licensed, then buy it [or throw away the cds/dvds you used if you need space for newer stuff]

But that's how I treat all digisubs...

And you all should do the same...

I do the try before you buy deal. Actually just about all hentai I own I watched either the fansub or raw of it first to decide wether I wanna get it. Also watched entire series fansub before deciding to buy it.. most of the box sets are from series I've watched before fansubed like Vandread, Love Hina, and Trigun.. And Naruto I just can't wait for the episodes so I watch 'em downloaded... but like I said this is something I do sometimes.

Does anyone ever wanna wait for the US release? I did this with elfen lied because it was already out here when I started watching the downloaded episodes but the experience from the DVD was a lot nicer so waiting a bit didn't seem bad.. and they did release the episodes on DVD pretty quickly. I'm guessing I'm one of the few people that sometimes wait for releases coming out in the US. Bleach I just wasn't that interested at first but from learning things about it made me grow interest in it but still finding out it is coming out here I can wait..

I guess I'm the only one that does this mainly.. oh well.. time to stop recommending to check out domestic releases to people probably they'll not listen.

Some people aren't picky when the quality is good enough, and some people are just too damn impatient when it comes to new releases, like myself. If an anime is good enough quality for me, I won't care. The only thing that bothers me is how good the dub, or sub is.

You're not the only one. I too try to buy most of the series I've seen on fansubs. The payoff is great (especially when I got the Petite Cossette DVD which is ungodly superior to the fansubs).

Another incentive of buying DVDs is some producers do go back and make touch-ups and improvements on the series. Tsukuyomi ~ Moon Phase definetely went through that, and I'm excited to get them once FUNi releases the DVDs.
