Problem with ripping a dvd
Ok, I'm having some issues with ripping my dvd. I am trying to rip Grave of the Fireflies to make an AMV. This is my first time really making an AMV. I made one before, but it was just for fun. Anyway...
I've tried several different programs trying to rip the dvd to AVI format. I've tried Saga DVD Ripper and 1Click DVD to AVI. It starts ripping, and then it hits about half way into the movie, and then it gives me some sort of sync error. It says the error is fixed, but it never finishes ripping. Also, when it hits this point in the movie, it starts ripping the same scenes over and over and over before it finally just quits and gives the sync error. At the very top of the error, it says the DVD may be damaged. But this makes no sense to me. I first used a borrowed dvd, and I tried cleaning it. Then I decided to just buy my own copy (I wanted to buy the dvd eventually anyway) and it gave me the same message with a brand new dvd.
The strange thing is, my friend (who lent me his dvd before I bought myself a copy) said he ripped it fine with 1Click, it just ripped as fullscreen instead of widescreen. So I don't understand if I used the same program to rip it, why is it giving me problems, but didn't give him problems?
So then I tried to use DVD Decrypter to get the VOB files. It made the VOB files with no problems. So then I was going to use WINAVI to convert the VOB files into AVI. Well, that caused another problem. For some reason, it was ripping the main movie file and the special story board bonus at the same time. So the scenes would switch back and forth to the completed movie to story board views in every scene. >_<
I really have no idea what to do at this point. I've posted in another forum, and no one seems to have any ideas besides using different programs or cleaning the dvd, which I did. And with every program I've used I get the same problem.
Can anyone please help me? Or have any ideas as to why it's doing this? I've ripped other dvds successfully with no problem, so I know it's not my computer. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I've been eager to make this AMV for so long now, and I plan to submit it to Otakon. But I really need to start working on it, and I just can't get this stupid dvd to rip!!! >_O

Have you Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides? I would suggest starting here after you've got the VOBs.

I just use FlaskMPEG to convert the vob files to something usable. It will convert to a lot of different codecs or uncompressed files. I'm pretty lazy so I just convert to divx and go from there.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Ok, I tried following those directions too, and it's giving me the same problem WINAVI gives me, where it goes back and forth between the completed animation movie and the story board sketches. It seems like the only way of getting rid of that is by directly ripping the dvd to avi, but then I have the sync error problem when I try to do that....Scintilla wrote:Have you Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides? Anymore ideas? :/

But it's just one movie. It's not a multiple episode dvd. Does that change anything?Scintilla wrote:Sounds like you've got alternate angles going on.
In that case, you have to make sure to rip in IFO mode and rip each episode individually, selecting only the proper angle (I believe the angle selection is clearer in SmartRipper).

So rip just the movie in IFO mode by itself?SailorWicca wrote:But it's just one movie. It's not a multiple episode dvd. Does that change anything?Scintilla wrote:Sounds like you've got alternate angles going on.

Well, I'm pretty sure it worked! If I have any other problems I discover down the line, I'll post about it. The only thing that didn't work right is that I unchecked both audio (Japanese & English) because I didn't need the audio and figured it'd save some space, but it still had the English audio in the avi. But I guess that doesn't really matter because it won't be used anyway. ^^0
Anyway, thank you soooooooooo much for your help! You have no clue how happy I am about this. *_* This has stumped everyone else I had asked for help.
