RAM: How much do you have of it?

Post by [Mike of the Desert] » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:58 pm

I think this is an important question. :P How much RAM do you have in your Hardware? Did you never faced problems like crashes, slowness or frustrating lags in the programs you use? I would like to know how much RAM do you have, and how much do you think it's important when editing.

Sorry for the technical thread. ;O But I think it'll be useful.

It's not so much the RAM when editing, it's the RAM when editing with which program - among other factors related to slowness and crashing like your processor, HD cleanliness etc. One person's tolerance for slowness/crashing will be different from someone else's, too.

I've got 750 RAM or so, any less and I would not be able to deal with the frustration of working with 18.6 GB of footage. This is in Premiere Pro, btw, and it regularly gives me memory errors every half hour or so, necessitating complete exit of the program. This isn't necessarily a crash, I've never *knocks very loudly on wood* lost any data or had my computer freeze up on me, but it definately brings my work to a screeching halt because these errors prevent me from rendering, among other things.
When memory errors aren't happening, simple effects render fairly quickly (no thumb twiddling), but applying something like particle effect fire to a 4 second clip can take my poor computer about an hour. No fire for me!

My computer also has difficulty handling so much footage, though I blame some of it on Premiere. After working for 15 minutes or so, about a half to two-thirds of the thumbnails in my bins (and when played on the monitor) turn black unless I restart the program. This makes browsing through all my clips difficult, at times.

I don't use my main HD for a scratch disk, btw, I save my 80 GB external drive for that and all my autosaves. That other drive has made a huge difference in workflow.
