720X480 only because thats default for my program..
I dont think that there is a "right size" there are some formats that are cleaner than others, and some sizes that are nicer than others i suppose, and ovbiously a 360x240 frame size wont look as nice as 720x480 when blown up to full screen on a computer that has its monitor resoulutions set really high, but it can save on space....
the only time I would worry too much about it is if youre doing a multi-editorer project that has a specific framesize set for the project... or if youre trying to compensate for quality... but thats just my opinion o.0

I hope you don't mean the final AMV, 'cause it either squishes or stretches the pictures.JaddziaDax wrote:720X480 only because thats default for my program..
For editing I'd go with the original size of your footage - if DVD 720x480 for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL. For the final AMV, make sure it has the right apsect ratio (4:3 or 16:9) and width and height are multiples of 16. You may read this:

and this:

Though there is a little mistake in it: at one point it say for PAL 788x576, but correct is 768x576.

thats usually the same size that the DVD rips to as well o.0 and yea... I've had to compensate a couple times on some videos "streatching" on me, but its not that bad o.0Keeper of Hellfire wrote:I hope you don't mean the final AMV, 'cause it either squishes or stretches the pictures.JaddziaDax wrote:720X480 only because thats default for my program..

My final versions are almost always 720x480 if I'm sending the vid off to a con, but most of the vids I have here on the org got compressed down to 480x480 for file size. With the 720x480, I've never had a problem with stretching, but the file size usually tends to be too large to upload as a MPEG-2. I should note that this is probably attributed to my not fully understanding what my programs are capable of in terms of recompression, and that I'm using the default.
Now I have done some tinkering with compressing the 720x480 vids into avi files for upload, but in doing so, the music/video didn't synch up in the final product just right...the timing was just a hair off, but I can still tell, and it drives me nuts when I watch it.
Just one more thing I have to improve on in the new year LOL.

I'm assuming it's SVCD. The specs for that require 480x480 with a 4:3 aspect flag so it displays correctly.Janzki wrote:That's a strange resolution.HorrorPhD wrote:My final versions are almost always 720x480 if I'm sending the vid off to a con, but most of the vids I have here on the org got compressed down to 480x480 for file size.
I usually work in 720x480, but my distribution copies have been at various resolutions. 480x360, 480x320, 512x336...I actually like 3:2 ratio because I get so accustomed to it while editing (and because I do most of my encodes for devices instead of Internet distribution) and don't care what anyone else thinks about it (and in a couple of cases have purposely distorted 4:3 footage by stretching it to 16:9), but as a precaution my newest videos (the MKVs) have the proper aspect flags, so it'll display at the Org-sanctified ratio in VLC or mplayer. Considering I've switched to AVC, I can also feel comfortable encoding at 720x480 instead of dropping the resolution to increase compressability.
