Realistic clipping time with processor-intensive scripting
Ok, I reciently started doing some clipping of Azumanga Diaoh using a single .d2v file for each disc. Hoping to save time, I browsed the AMVwiki page to look for some scripts to clean up my video with. The script I found there resulted in an amazing looking video, although it was a bit heavy in the processor-intensive processes.
I started working on this yesterday and kept it running all night in hopes it would finish by the time I woke up. It didn't. "Strange," I thouht. "It should be done by now, right?" I looked at the batch processing list in VdubMod and saw it displaying a time of around 5 1/2 hours for a 2 1/2 minute clip that I had done. Through some time estimates, I figured it wouldn't be done for quite a while (around 20 total hours of work)... It's still running and will probably continue to do so for another couple of hours.
Now, my question is, should it realistically take around 20 hours to do 11 minutes worth of footage clipping with that script in VdubMod, or did I screw something up?
My system has a 2.4GHz P4 processor and 640MB of RAM with not much more than basic processes running while I clip.
Also, the system resources mannager says i'm running at 100% CPU and have constently been doing so since it began, but my compter's overheating issue (an issue that is apparent within 20 minutes of playing a game or even when watching an hour of video) has not manifested itself.

I figured mftoon was the source of the biggest slowdowns, so I took some screenshots with and without it (on single frames) and the diferences were striking. I'm on another computer right now since mine is a bit busy clipping, so I really can't post those screen shots or anything (i'm not even sure I saved them) but the difference is amazing.
I haven't however, tried to do the same clip twice and time the differences yet.

Is your mainboard dual channel capable? If yes, what is your memory configuration? If it's 2x256 MB + 128 MB, either take out the 128MB module or add a second. If it's 512MB + 128 MB, replace the 128MB with 512 MB. Make sure to put them into the right slots. This will increase the speed of your system. Of course will memory intensive processes take much more advantage of this than processor intensive.BasharOfTheAges wrote:...640MB of RAM...

You can get the same effect much more cheaply with either K-mftoon (found in the MaskTools ZIP archive) or the combination of FastLineDarken and LimitedSharpen.BasharOfTheAges wrote:I figured mftoon was the source of the biggest slowdowns, so I took some screenshots with and without it (on single frames) and the diferences were striking. I'm running an old Dell Inspiron 1100, so my RAM is PC2100 DDR SODIMM... The config is a 512MB and a 128MB stick (it came with 256MB spread out in 2 128MB sticksKeeper of Hellfire wrote: Is your mainboard dual channel capable? If yes, what is your memory configuration? I'll have to try that, thanks. Anything that's better than the roughly 110:1 ratio (processing time : clip length) that I ended up with would be amazing. I have 3 more DVDs worth of video to harvest clips from -- this will certainly be a time saver.Scintilla wrote: You can get the same effect much more cheaply with either K-mftoon (found in the MaskTools ZIP archive) or the combination of FastLineDarken and LimitedSharpen.

The clips are coming from and going to the same (USB2) external drive. I'd expect some slowdown, but I think the bottleneck is in the process...808-buma wrote:are the files being written to the hard drive of your computer or to a network hard drive? I've tried writing clips in the past to a network hard drive and it takes nearly 4x as long to do.
just a thought...

You shouldn't go from one hard drive back to the same hard drive, that will increase the speed right there a bit. Also, yeah, mftoon is slow as hell.
Life's short.
