Indeed, this has to be that one unusually-long series that actually justifies the long, long time (I don't think there was one filler episode in the whole thing, either).

I don't think the ending will disappoint, although the last few eps will require some thinking to make sense of.

Episode 73 = biggest cliffhanger ever (especially if they delay the fansub of 74 again)

Anyway, no spoilers. I can't wait, myself. :)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The level of character development throughout the series has been astounding. My favorite example of this is Inspector Lunge. I would have been happy with a simple 'Javert' type character, but Lunge gives us so much more. Without revealing too much I'd just like to say I'm a big fan of his motives and his reactions as the story has unfolded. I'm really looking forward to how he's going to fit into these last few episodes.

Indeed. Lunge is probably the character that undergoes the most development in his role per se (besides, perhaps, Nina), while at the same time keeping everything that made him an awesome character in the first place. It's almost like he goes from a stereotype into something entirely his own - and Urasawa (the author) is seriously great at taking cliched ideas and stereotypes, and then making something entirely original and awesome out of them.

The episode where he had that little encounter with Tenma (around 20 or so) already set Lunge up as perhaps the ultimate bad-ass, but shockingly enough he's actually been getting MORE badass as the time goes on, especially after mid-series or so.
And I assure you that he reaches the peak of bad-assness in the series finale 8-)

I started watching Monster again last night. :D

The bit of reasoning that Dr. Gillen makes in episode 31 (during his encounter with Lunge) is sheer brilliance.

I find that I'm starting to like these supporting characters more and more as the show progresses.

Ah yea.

There's an even more brilliant bit of reasoning that Lunge comes to about another 10 episodes later, which was actually kind of the turning point in the series for me.
Spoiler, from end of Schuwald arc wrote:It's when Lunge is standing in Johan's former room, noting how no human being could possibly have left so little evidence of having lived there there (none, in fact!), unless... and then I could almost feel these hundreds of little pieces snap together in his rather brilliant head. And he does that really, really cold laugh.

Gave me shivers. I think that by this point, given that the most cold-hearted skeptic in the series is convinced... well, it's about as convincing as it gets. That's Monster's subtle brand of horror for you :)

Grr! Don't tempt me into highlighting that!

Anyway, just watched episode 33. Dieter is still adorable. :D

I'm not tempting anyone into anything...

My favorite part of the series is actually in the 40's. You know, the whole arc that takes place in

I think it's the setting. It honestly gets to its most athmospheric there. I've actually been there, but only briefly; after Monster, the city jumped to the top of the list of places I want to go to :)

I actually got into the series by accident, but once started this show is hard to stop.

Too bad we have to wait three months between fansub releases grrr. I'm terrible about watching stuff like that, so I've just been collecting them when they come out since my wife watches this show demonically the day it gets released. I'll finish it when the show wraps up. Too damm much suspense between eps.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

I'd like to wait and finish the show after it wraps, it's so much easier to keep track of every little detail that way. However, in pratice I find watching as soon as possible just to hard to resist. So, the way I see it, I'll just keep watching the way I am now. Then after the show is complete I'll just fall back to around ep. 45 and watch through to the end again. Everybody wins...

Well both sides of me anyway. :D

I know the feeling. In ep 67 when

I'm hoping I can hold myself from watching around ep 70 or somewhere till 74 comes out. Don't think I'll make it, maybe the subbers will be nice and release all four so I don't have to force myself to wait.
