Where does the dumpy loser image anime has come from

And why do people propagate it. Not everyone is proud of being part of something that encourages grown men to dress up like sailor moon.

Anime is considered geeky. If your on this site your a geek. Its a sub-culture thats ridiculed by pop culture. Why? because it doesnt fit into current pop culture. If you realy give the fuck, your an idiot who should stop watching anime now.

Ask GAiNAX.

And where do you see people propogating it? I can't remember ever meeting an anime fan who was a dumpy loser.

Not only that, but I've also met one of the said large guys who's fond of dressing up as Sailor Mercury at cons, and greatly enjoyed talking to him for a couple of hours. And he seems to have a rather decent life, mind you.

It's all relative. My interest in history is often considered to be dorky by the wider society; I consider this 'wider society' pathetic for not wanting to know.

Getting laid is not all the only motivation worth pursuing in life, you know.

Biologically speaking, it is. I know anime is geeky, but it doen't have to be that way. If people would stop all the cosplay, chibi, engrish, overly happy or cute and all that stuff then anime would be something that could be taken seriously. It seems like a choice to me.

Amazing! The way to get rid of anime's geekiness is to remove half of the anime fans!

We Hello Kitty fans are the problem, I never knew

I wouldn't argue with the fact that for most people who aren't so into it, these people do indeed seem strange no matter how you look at it. And yes, the "inherent and delineated" around anime does get on some people's nerves.

But I think the problem with anime 'not being taken seriously' in the West still has more to do with the average person's attitude to 'cartoons' than with the otakuist zealaousness.

Personally, I understand the hardcore 'otaku' quite well, but in the last couple of years I've been intentionally distancing myself from them (this forum is as close as I get to the anime fan community lately). And yet I can still take anime seriously. Nor do I mind being seen as a dork on occasion. 'Dork' is a relative term, anyway; where I come from, it's not a fault - it's a social obligation

I can take anime seriously, no problem, I just have a hard time keeping a straight face when told about some of the new things the anime community came up with. Gothiloli and Nevada-tan cosplay are some of the more freakish examples.

For those who don't know, Nevada-tan, also called Girl A is a japanese schoolgirl that killed a classmate of hers with a cutter knife for no reason whatsoever. She has become an idol in the anime community, spawning tons of fanart and fiction. And if you're wondering about Nevada-tan, it's cause the sweater she was wearing that day said Nevada on it.
