People have fantacys most of their lives. They change over the years, but we still have them, a way to escape from our everyday existence. Many people have fantacys about movie characters, not the actor but the character, some read books and have live in another world for a time, music can lead us to fantacy worlds. Anime is just another form of movie, we get caught up in the story and the characters and, for a time, escape to a better life. It may not be an obsession, just a fun getaway.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Come and join us on the tiny but fun forum at http://www.allanime.org

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I after I posted my last post I never read any more replies. I was afraid I was going to be made fun of for saying what I said. Thanks for all the nice replies. Tell you what's weird though is being a member of the 4kids forum at www.4kids.tv/forum and reading these threads by 8-12 yr olds telling everyone how hot all these characters are. I mean there are a lot of 16-23 yr olds there too but to hear an 8 year old talk about somebody being totally hot, it kind of scares me. Maybe I'm being too harsh. Also if otakus and anime fans weren't mean to obsess over anime characters, would they're be such a thing as hentai? If a character is hot, they're hot and that my friends is the end of the story.

Yes back on topic!

I think really anime obession isn't bad as long as you don't let it go to far. Once you get to the point were you convince yourself they are all real, then you need help.

I totally agree. I just really hope no one has convined themselves that drawings are real. Now that I would be scared off.

If you think about it, unless the character is really out there, it's not too extreme to think that somebody might look like or act like the character you like, not exactly of course. They won't be a giant robot pilot or anything, stay in vcurrent limits.

It is too obsesed though if you actively go out in persuit of the character you like.

You think there could be people out there who just happen to look and/or act like a realy anime character? I guess anything's possible. It would be kind of sad if someone purposely went out of there way to hunt down and anime character they have no hope of finding. I think that I'm too obsessed. I know anime characters aren't real but sometimes I feel like they are the only things I have. Moving from one state to another is hard when you have to leave all your friends behind and when you are shy and afraid of people anime characters can become a little too real. Especially if they are the only things you think and dream about. Ok I think I'm weird.

I know the feeling. But I don't think it's really weird. Watching anime helps pass the time and gives you something interesting.

Agreed. Fantasizing over anime isn't harmful as long as you keep it in perspective. It's a fantasy, an escape from the tougher things in life, but not meant to take one's life over. If someone totally devotes their life to obession and fantasy, they'll just end up with a wasted life of unfulfilled opportunities and meaninglessness. What good is anime compared to life, love, opportunity and hope? Not that anime in itself is bad, but too much of anything is never good. Perhaps I'm reading a little too much into this, though; most of the people here don't seem to be going that far down the road. But take this as a word of caution, young otaku everywhere.

By the way, prettysoldiersailormoon, I think I know a little of how you feel. I'm also really shy and don't make new friends easily. What I'd suggest is that you use your obession of anime to attract new friends; you could start a club, or walk around with an anime t-shirt or book cover at school. I helped start a writing club at my school, and most of the people who joined up over the years were quite a bit like me, and most were otaku too. I don't mean to say you should or shouldn't do something, or that I absolutely understand what you're going through, but I felt I had to say my piece.

Hey, feel free to say anything you want. Actually I'm a member of the anime club at my college and I've gotten to know a few people. The problem is, is that I'm more open on the net that in real life. On our forum board I'm the top poster with 269 posts. That is sad. I just don't see many of the club members around campus much. But I started a live journal just because a lot of the members had one and now we leave comments to each other all the time but that is still over the internet and not in real life. Sometimes I actually watch anime than study for something because I just need to escape. I do that very often. I'm passing all my classes...I understand the not going too far part because I wouldn't do that. I know the difference between reality and fantasy. Actually my goal in life is to try to open an anime store. That way people can obsess all they want and be around their own kind! I have never wished an anime character was real, but sometimes it doesn't seem like a bad idea.
