I like it, and it works, but it's a little simple. I'd like to use a new contest to encourage exploration in something entirely new, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'd also need a hella good theme.

I was thinking of trying for a "reassemble your fav. live-action movie for the audio, or just take a scene, and run an AMV to that," like the Trigun-Once upon a Time in Mexico vid from a few years back. Could be done for laughs, for irony, appropriateness, etc. Not sure anyone would be interested though, and might devolve into nothing but lip-synch humor.

Themed contests might be a bit tough on entires as contests that have a themed category don't get as many entreis.. but it may be worth a try...

Take the Live Action out of Expo and create a Live Action Expo? With enough entries, you could even start breaking it down into categories.

Might cause the vidding community to swarm in, though...could be good or bad, depending on how many Harry Potter, LotR, and Buffy *coughSLASH* videos you want to see :P

Hmm... it occurs to me that audience judging would applly most easily to a themed contest with a single winner....

As for starting a live-action contest... nah. they have their own contests and conventions. I don't mind the occasional live-action vid slipping in, but I don't think I've got the stomach for an entire LA contest. Kinda warps the idea of the VAT.

that and the fact that lots North American Companies are VERY agressive in defending thier copyright... I don't think AWA needs letters from NA companies asking not to show videos with thier footage in it

I kinda dislike the idea of an audiance judged contest. Think about it, someone uses Naruto or Fullmetal Alchemist, or something else of high wide spread popularity, and everything would go straight to hell. An audiance would end up going with the best video for their favorite anime, rather than the video with the best editing. It's an interesting idea, but it's far too unreliable in reality. It might work better with a themed contest, but I somehow doubt the average congoers ability to vote for anything other than the best video with their favorite anime in the contest. It's hard to say exactly what you should do, but that's my two cents on what shouldn't be done.

I'm wrestling with some contest concepts myself for Anime Evolution's AMV track....

A few ideas I've thought about was to have a "best of" contests.. Yes it could be themed, but it could also be something like the best of 2005 (all videos made in that year can only compete).. I also thought of a "Best of" period in wich any video could compete, but that might be asking for trouble and a pile of entires...

Actually Matt, the audiance voting would not be that hard... I do that for Anime Evolution and the ballot counting takes maybe 30 minutes for about 300 ballots or so by a pair of volunteers... It can be done without too much trouble

I'm not especially fond of the audience-vote contests. To put it gently, an audience's favor can be won by sheer virtue of fandom of a certain anime or song. So having the creators enter a contest with fan-pandering in mind wouldn't produce the caliber of results that Master's enjoyed. Of the ideas so far, I support the themed contest the most highly. Leave the source and audio options open and have simply a certain theme, and there should still be enough diversity to avoid the feeling of repetition. Not to mention that it just plain sounds like a fun idea. Oh, and having the deadline set at least a few weeks after Pro would be optimal, as it would give those who wish to participate in both enough time to produce quality entries.
