Survival Horror!

Post by dj_ultima_the_great » Sun Oct 02, 2005 10:25 am

Welcome to the Survival Horror Contest!

As the title might imply, this is a contest seeking the creation of some truly great survival horror game videos. I’ve found that this site seems to be lacking in them, so I’d like your help to remedy that! For the rules and technical bits...

I Will
- be the coordinator (though it’s my first time, so be nice)
- be the sole person to judge the videos
- clarify anything that I can
- make some mistakes, likely (again, be nice to the n00b)
- not download or watch any videos until all submissions are in.
- not give you technical advice. I suck with that kind of stuff.
- watch all final submissions at least three times before making my score judgements – a fair chance for everyone.

Do
- feel free to use any installations of any survival horror games - Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Siren, Fatal Frame, Parasite Eve, etc.
- use any audio of your liking, but beware death metal; I can only stand so much of it, and I’m your judge.
- use any amount or lack of effects; I am unbiased in that sense, so fire away.
- get the best quality footage you can.
- make the video as if you were submitting it to the .org – this includes what is normal for you with bumpers, format, what have you.
- upload the final product to the .org and PM me with the link.

***Note: some of the games I listed are hybrids. For example DMC is survival horror/action and PE is survival horror/RPG. Games like this are also legal in my contest. I'm taking it on the honor system that you'll be honest in what your game is.

Do Not
- use trailer footage. The prerendered effects and text will distract me.
- use gameplay footage. Randomly interposed lifebars and whatnot are SO not cool.
- put a watermark or logo on your video. Again, it’s distracting.
- go under two minutes or above six (minus bumpers). Ten second leeway in either direction – because I’m nice. ^_~ Comedy videos are an exception. They may be as low as thirty seconds long due to the nature of the concept.

Other Rules/Things to Know and Consider
- no more than three comedy videos submitted, please.
- I’d like a fairly even mix of subgenres – in other words, I don’t want everyone submitting an action or horror video. In the case of things like Silent Hill or Fatal Frame, you can make story-based videos that are not horror. Just an example.
- character profiles are encouraged as an extra challenge.
- as the last two points have illustrated, originality is important to me. Make it unique.
- share your video idea or keep it secret. I don't mind either way.
- only one video per person, please.

***Note: no “partner projects” or collaborations. You must do this all by your lonesome.

Scoring (in points)
Originality - 25
Capture/Output Quality - 10
Sound Quality - 10
Action/Editing Sync - 25
Meshing (does the song fit?) - 10
First Impression - 10
Reviewability - 10
--------------------------------------
Total - 100 Points

Automatic Free Opinion If
- you make a comedy video (limit 3 - first come, first serve)
- you use Smile Empty Soul – “Silhouettes” with Devil May Cry – this will take creative editing due to the lyrics
- you use Disturbed – “Prayer” or “Liberate” with Devil May Cry
- you use Nine Inch Nails - "Sin" with Silent Hill 2
- you use A Perfect Circle - "Passive" with Silent Hill 2

***Note: the songs are on a first come basis. You claim it, and no one else can do it. This prevents me from being flooded with owed opinions and keeps the repetition of the idea to a minimum.

Awards
- 1st Place – 5 opinions from me on any videos of winner's choice
- 2nd Place – 2 opinions from me “ ”
- 3rd Place – 1 opinion from me “ ”
- wildcard – pimping in my signature, with any catch phrase/link image of the winner’s choice

***Notes: 1. My opinions average between 500 and 1000 words – sometimes more, rarely less
2. wildcard – I haven’t determined what will decide this factor yet

Tentative video completion deadline is December 15th. I want this done before my college Christmas break, which starts on the 23rd. If all submissions are in before then, I may choose to start a little early.

I reserve the right to boot any videos that break my rules. Since I’m not watching them until “d-day,” though, disqualifications will not happen until a day or two prior to the results. If you think your video borderlines something that works against my rules, please contact me and say what the potential problem could be early on. I don’t forsee many disqualification instances, since the rules are pretty easy.

Preferred method of contact: PM me if it’s something specific to you. If it is a general comment/question that all could benefit from, just post in this thread. I’m very active on the forums, so responses should come quick.

I hope this answers any potential questions. If not, go right on ahead and tell me what I’m messing up. I’m saying this excessively, but it is my first time doing this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I’m being long-winded as usual. The most important part of all of this is to have fun. I’m not looking for the next Kevin Caldwell; I just want some great survival horror videos. ^_^

As always, Farewell, Good Luck, and Happy AMV-ing!

Thread has been completely revamped, since it was too specific before. Hopefully, this will draw some participants.

I'm definately interested in this. I'll have to try ripping cutscenes from some ps2 games though since I've never actually need to do that before.

I'll check the threads about it and so long as that works out I'm in.

Just to let everyone know, if I don't get any more participants within the next two weeks (starting today - 10/6/05), then, for efficiency's sake, I'm requesting a lock on this thread. I have a different contest idea, and I'd rather this didn't get in the way on the off-chance that someone does post.

mikestrife - thanks for taking interest. I'll tell ya what. If this does go downhill and I end up not running the contest, then I'll still offer you a free opinion if and when you make that video. How's that sound? ^_~

Edit: Since I'm extremely impatient, and not anticipating any more participants, I'm requesting a lock on this thread now. I should have known better than to make myself wait for two weeks.

Thanks.

The contest was good motivation to get a survival horror amv done, since I haven't done one since Silent Hill 1. But that's just as good a reason to do it
