Who cares if it causes spam? At least you wont have people bitching to have the comments removed because they have a bad score on them.

Limiting it to just one per video per person is a good idea. As for exchanges, I don't know that it is nessicary to have anyreply function. In fact that would just mean more coding because there would have to ba a page to view all the replies.

I see it more like a post-it note. Just jot down your reaction to the video, and stick it to the wall. Then the creator would havea bunch of short comments, maybe a little spam but it wouldn't hurt anyone.

Or you could have a guestbook type thing. This would be very useful for deciding wether to download avideo, but then the creator would be much more upset by negitive coments, perhaps the same "make public" system could be used except instead of being on a link that you don't even know contains anything or a reviewthat's to long to read, it would just be right below the comments box.

That last idea would, in my oppinion, quickly become one of the main ways people decide wether to download a video.

Guestbook style - no reply function, one post per member.
-this will create no more spam than opinions already do, those who want to spam will find a way to spam no matter what they're using.

Creator ability to delete posts.
-They aren't affecting a chart (top 10, star list), and this way you won't need a 'make public' feature, and you won't have to worry about spam because the creator can delete posts he doesn't like. This fits with the 'guestbook' idea perfectly.

All the posts would either be public (with the creator editing them to just keep the favorable comments, much like the creators who put quotes from reviewers on their vid description pages), or they would all be private (where it won't matter if there is spam or not because no one but the creator can see them anyway).

I'm leaning toward the private and 'for the creator' because I doubt they'd want to give us the option to delete our own 'guestbook' entries. Without a delete option, there would be complaints just like there are with opinions, from creators wishing to get rid of spam and flame ops. Make them private and it doesn't matter what people are writing. You don't even need to give the writer a chance to read all the other posts people have made on that vid - it's none of his business because the feedback entries are for the creator and the creator isn't going to reply to him in the feedback form.

Anyone who wants to reply can do it via pm or email, just like a website owner does with guestbook entries.

If I thought people would use it, I'd make my own guestbook for each vid and link it in the profile. If *I* can do that, I'm sure the coders on this site can do it on a mass scale. People are much more likely to use a 'sign guestbook' option if it's part of this website and not an outside link.

I see no drawbacks to this.

Spam? If you're afraid someone will spam your vid, don't read the guestbook entries - problem solved. It's none of your business if other creators are getting spammed, so how does it affect you?

This won't affect the current review system - those who want to give high/low scores will continue to do so, along with those who consider opinions 'reviews' and like to write a few detailed ops. Maybe this will stop the 'all 10s I have nothing to say but yay it was fun!' reviews...if you're worried about losing those, then I can see why you'd complain. Otherwise, the flamers will still flame since they can give all 1s in regular ops, and the reviewers will still review since they can score categories in regular ops. All this does is give an additional form of feedback for the creator.

What, are you saying that half the people on the most useful list being bumped up by hundreds of words simply because of WDHN is a bad thing? And here I had complete faith in the idea that someone repeating the same thing over and over again till the field fills up is a good measure of usefulness.

Hey,

I was thinking over this idea. Currently, an decent opinion percentage is about 2%. Suppose the percentage of people giving quick comments is much higher at about 20%, since they are really easy to give and don't take very long at all.

Where / how would the comments be displayed to the video creator? A video that gets 1000 downloads may have 200 quick comments. If member start giving quick comments at 30-40%, that's 300-400 per 1000 downloads. If the video gets 5000 downloads, that could be 2000 quick comments to display/read. Percentages could be really high (60-75%) since people write simple things like "Dude, the video was cool" and that's it.

Do you guys have any suggestions for that?

Phade.

Simple, paginate them. Maybe 20 or 50 to a page.

Perhaps they could go on the same list as your other opinions for that video? Perhaps have filters to sort between the regular comments, just scored ops, or both. As a side effect, it would add pagination to the regular ops :)

Adding on to that idea, new comments would be listed on the members main page in the same box that opinions are currently listed in. You could add a symbol such as '*' by the scored opinions so people can easily tell which is a full op and which is just a comment.

You could impliment a quick comment display page not unlike that used for individual pictures at cosplay.com with a display similar to the current opinion frames but with only 1 field.

Hey,

How long are these comments going to be? I was thinking they would be a sentence or two. Do you have a link to a currently implement system as an example?

I don't know a thing about web programming, but shouldn't there be some way to put a character limit on them?
