love, death, and the unpronounceable

Post by Kai Stromler » Mon Sep 05, 2005 1:26 pm

It is a joke video. It is not a joke video. It is what it is. It is SH103, after a long layoff.

still waters fall frozen
video: Lunar Legend Tsukihime
audio: "Unforgiven" as performed by Iron Horse
format: xvid/mp3
download: local

Submitted for your consideration: a video featuring a depressive anime to a bluegrass version of a depressive metal song. The task before you: to determine whether or not this video is a five-minute angst bath, a sophisticated joke, both, or just or 55 MB of crap.

In a way, this video is more Brechtian than SH099. In a way, it can be watched without any clue that it is. Some help figuring this out would be appreciated.

Why does this feel like you making a statement on what will come out on top, chains or freedom?

Very enjoyable, its always nice to see more people using Tsukihime. I was wondering if you resized it, because on playback, at least for me, the moon looks more like an egg than a sphere.

A definitely serious character profile pulled off with the ease of a joke video indeed. I wouldn't say it's a joke video per se since I didn't laugh.

Very, very cohesive. Stupidly cohesive even, because it seemed to make total sense to someone who had no clue what was going on (i.e. me).

A definite win. It might be one of the best angsty character profile I've ever seen. Certainly the best bluegrass video I've seen. Put those two together, and there you have it. Clearly not crap - and if it is, I'd sure like more crap.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Ok I'm one for the people how did'nt get it. I never saw the show and thus I get even less I guess. And sometimes the repitition of the chainscene got on my nerves but overall an enjoyable video.

You've taken 3 unlikely things that I must admit I enjoy (The Unforgiven, Country, and Tsukihime), and woven them togethr rather nicely. Some of the effects were repitious and some of the masks should've stayed in longer, but, beyond that, there's not a whole lot to complain about. The "Joke" section of the video mostly comes from the initial "wtf"ness of the audio source (what, being a country cover of a metal song), but, once you get past that, the video is a very enjoyable piece of drama.

Probably the best video I've seen out of you yet. Also, PM me about the reqs list, I would like to offer a host for it.

If I saw a squaredance to The Unforgiven I would die right there... some psychological drama would only be a plus.

You may want to check your playback settings (especially if you played it fullscreen); the release aspect ratio of this is 512x288, which is exactly 16x9, and a step up in accuracy from my former widescreen habits of 512x256.

Overall, I'm glad at the positive reactions to this weird, dark, ...... thing, and sorry that those who didn't get it didn't get it...whatever "it" eventually turns out to be. Something I really strive for is for my videos to be equally accessible (or, as the case may be, impenetrable) whether the viewer has seen the anime in question or not. As those who have seen the show can attest, this video has very little to do with Tsukihime, and even I was surprised at the degree to which I was able to omit most of the plot and keep the side characters out of the frame.

Yes, the chain(s) get repetitive. As an editor, repetitive motifs are part of my style, and this was a five-minute video with a lot of phrases that needed tying back. I wish I could say that it was intended to set up the last overkill shot, but I didn't have that planned when I started the video. :P

The next SH video is starting to creak into production; it will be out in 13 days and be totally unlike this one. Enough with drama and darkness.

As for the recs list, PM me if you wanna host it; I'm trying to get my site up again, but who knows how long that'll take.
