Should you be allowed to delete your own video?

Personally, although I kind of understand the position against offering the delete function, I wouldn't mind having it there, even if it's sole purpose is to delete old or unwanted videos. For example, if you're an editor and have had an account here a long time, chances are you have several videos, each better than the last, which show how you've progressed as an editor. It's possible that eventually, you'd want to remove the older videos, which aren't examples of your best, or even example of good editing, compared to what you can do now.
Just my thoughts.

And all of that goes against the philosophy of the site, which is to categorize every AMV that has ever existed. Insert dead horse here.Resk wrote:Personally, although I kind of understand the position against offering the delete function, I wouldn't mind having it there, even if it's sole purpose is to delete old or unwanted videos. Categorize, not host. Switch it to "the delete local file option" and it's not an issue of the site's philosophy. No one should be able to delete a video profile if the video was actually completed. Asking the site to stop hosting your video because you no longer wish to share it is an entirely different subject.dokool wrote:And all of that goes against the philosophy of the site, which is to categorize every AMV that has ever existed.

x2 Arigatomina brings up a very good point. Should the site be responsible for keeping hosted videos forever? Does is it treat it the same as keeping video profiles?Arigatomina wrote:Categorize, not host. Switch it to "the delete local file option" and it's not an issue of the site's philosophy. I think it depends - people come to this site hoping to find their AMVs, and the 'Org has become the de facto place for them. A library might list a book in their catalogue, but would they take it off their shelf if the author requested it? In the end it really depends on how much of an obligation Phade believes he has to the AMV-viewing public at large.Aaron wrote:x2 Arigatomina brings up a very good point. I think we should be able to delete our own videos if we feel like it. Personally I fuck up many times while uploading because, well, I'm just stupid like that. More than once, I've found that I have uploaded a crappy version of my video (A Beta or something) and have to go to the MODs to ask for deletion. I dont really care for that because 1. it's a pain and 2. (I don't know hw this happened) but i clicked on the wrong video to request being deleted? Unfortunatly I didnt save my videos once they're uploaded (Now I make sure to) and one of my videos has now vanished into nothingness. I mean, it wasn't fantastic or anything but I still liked having it.

Oops, I thought I responded to this before I left for Otakon last week, but I guess not. My apologies.
Before uploading, there is a fairly lengthy disclaimer basically telling the uploader to send their final version of a video. We did not (and still do not) intend for the local servers to be used for beta or less finished versions. There is also the strong implication that, as with any hosting service, we retain the right to administer the files you transfer here as we wish. Perhaps this needs to be made even clearer in the disclaimer, although after reading it several times, it seemed pretty clear to me. However, we (the administration) are not as well-versed in lawyerese as we need to to get the disclaimer to cover all the bases and sound like it makes good sense without being too harsh so a rewording may take a while. Suggestions are always welcome.
We will not allow creators to delete their own hosted videos arbitrarily, since keeping them around gives us a) proof of their existence and b) evidence of wrongdoing when they occur. I can think of quite a few examples of abuse, but I'd rather not give people ideas on how to circumvent the current system. You may PM/IM/e-mail/contact me privately if you want me elaborate though.
So although we refuse to delete videos for archival purposes (unless they fall into the prescribed rules for deletion), allowing the creators/uploaders the ability to limit access to the files they uploaded to the local server is a reasonable request.
I talked to Phade about this earlier and although the original intent of this site was to catalog every AMV in existence, with the advent of the Golden Donut, Phade has decided he wanted to expand the site goals to include HAVING every AMV in existence, if possible. I disagree with him on this matter however and believe that the sole purpose of this site should remain as simply a catalog and, until we come to a firm agreement, I think this is the assumption you should all go under.Aaron wrote:x2 Arigatomina brings up a very good point.
