For example, when I look at a thread, if someone announces the title in all caps lock or if the title has bad grammar or spelling, that turns me away most of the time. Same with titles that just say "first AMV" or "new AMV". And then in the actual message part of the post, if you don't say much about the video other than what the song and anime are, it usually doesn't interest me enought to download it unless if the song/anime combination interests me. If the creator has nothing interesting to say about the video, then it's likely that there's nothing interesting about the video. And we all just want to see videos that we think we'll enjoy.
I think silver_moon hit it right on the spot here. Presentation is a huge part of it. Some people don't even bother placing a link! Others can sit and write personal comments or some key things which may draw the viewer in, and sometimes I find that it helps.

In answer to your question, I look for anime that I'm familiar with, creators that I know, and sometimes unknown song/anime combinations. There's nothing like going into a video blind and being blown away. I also look in the video description for at least some notes about the video. I'm not expecting an essay, I just want to know a little bit about what I'm getting myself into/if this is the kind of video I want to go for.

You have to face it, as well: this site thrives off of popularity. Everyone lunges for people who've set a name for themselves by making good videos or by making a video which you personally liked. When you see the creator's name, it'll click in your mind. "Oh, I've seen such-and-such video of his, and loved it! Maybe this'll be good, too," and you just pray for consistency. Try spreading your name around the Opinion Exchange. Lots of people tend to hang out there.

Then again, this is coming from one of the least popular people here, so.

i forgot about that yeah.. if they announce their video in a thread and has like this little screenshot photoshopped so it's got the title and stuff looking neat.. that gets me anticipated to watch the video.

First of a big thanx to dj_ultima_the_great! I've been asking myself this for the longest time but never came out and just said it, anyhow..

I fell as though I usually go for the ones that have either no replies, and the ones that have a lot, just so I can get a balance of the new AMV's that come out, and I only do this when I actually get around to d/ling vids, b/c a lot of the times I can't or don't.. :( Presentation also plays a pretty big part, like banners and comments left by the creator, and most important if not least the title of the video(which is usally the thread name as well..) So yeah.. those are my ways of going about checking new vids and what not, I don't really care too much if its a great creator or a newb, I never truly judge until I've seen the vid..

for me...

1) Title. This is the main thing for me. It's what you see first when you start browsing through announcements. If it has a title that stirs up some interest in me I'll at least click the thread to see what it's about (more of this later). Worst thing you can do is "MY NEW AMV! CHECK IT OUT!"... I mean "duh".. of course it's mostly going to be your latest creation. This is one of the signs that tells you about the level of the creator. If the title is like that the AMV itself will also most likely suck. Second worst thing is to add words like Evangeliyoon or Naruto in the title.. but please keep doing it so I can avoid those damn things also in the future  On the other hand if the title includes one of my favourite series I WILL check out the thread. Also one certain way to catch my attention is to add the word "maid" in it.. ^.^

2) Creator. Yes, there are some creators that catch my attention whenever they release a new AMV. Not as important as the title, but if the title is at least semi-interesting and it's at least a somewhat known editor, I'll check out the thread to see what has he/she made this time. Sadly many times I ran into some Evangeliyoon (and others) boredom that way but.. *shrug* can't win all the time.

3) Replies. It's more common that people reply these announcement-threads to compliment the AMV, instead of giving their honest short opinion about it. So if the posts reach the second page I might check out what has stirred up so much conversation. This is countered by the 1) though.

..and now. Congratulations, you have managed to catch my attention and I have clicked your announcement-thread. What do I expect to see?
Not much.. Short info and advertisement speech of what you have done, link and especially the anime/music-combo that you have used. If there's no mention of anime/music used and I have to click the link you gave to see it and end up running into an Evangeliyoon-AMV I WILL dislike you. I'm too lazy to come and kill your entire family, but.. dislike.

..and to emphazise a certain point:

i look for threads with a lot of replies. cause sometimes there are pretty entertaining flamewars in there.

i don't really use amv announcements to find new amvs.

The announcements forum has become THE place to gather around here! It's awesome and hardly ever gets locked ;p.

but anyways, yeah, author and post counts is where i usually go at..
If it's Koop or anybody that even MENTIONS RDS it'll deffiniteley get to 2 pages in a day and be over-rated. Koop gets like 5.

Koop posted here mentioning my video was "nicely done". Though I appreciate the comment, I don't think the simple fact that he posted helped my video at all

Then again, I don't hold koop as high as some others do  8-)

Usually I don't go on AMV announcements for search new Amvs, this especially because of my connection, too slow and painful for my money.
