I've looked all over and all I see is 2.4X, sure there's 4X media I could get online, but I'd much rather pick it up in person somewhere.

I've checked Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Staples, Compusa, and Circuit City so far... no dice.
I was out shopping for earbuds and took some time to look at the DVD media. Checked CompUSA, Best Buy, Office Depot, and Fry's - found the same thing you did. Everybody has the Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4X...and that's all as far as dual layer goes.

Well that got out of hand quickly...

I'm consulting with the tech head... should have an answer one way or another in a few hours.

Found it. As TaranT points out here: http://www.awa-con.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4546

There was a clarification posted in the message board over at awa-con.com . I'd forgotten about it during the final upload into the website form, so the correction didn't get made when I was doing the final proofread. Going in to correct it now.
That doesn't make any sense. I don't see the content being mastered for BOTH dual-layer discs (~4 hours) and single-layer discs (~2 hours). You'd be mastering for BOTH formats, depending upon what people send? Err...
Er... remember that we did it both by VHS and DVD last year...

Anyway, the rules are 3 4x dual-layer (3 for contest, and 1 for potential screwed-up copies) or 6 single-layer (4 for contest, 2 for potential screw up).

I see, 6 blank dvds is alot cheaper than 3 dual layer dvds, thats for sure.

You can get Blank single layer dvds for about....25 cents a piece nowadays.

That's still one "compilation," though. The capacity of a T120 S/VHS and a single-layer DVD, for the purpose of what's being done, is essentially the same (approximately two hours).

What needs to be compiled and mastered for a dual-layer DVD is completely different than what needs to be compiled and mastered for a single-layer DVD. You're talking two different final versions that will need to be created and tested on the AWA side of things. It's irrelevant for us sending stuff in, except for the issues with possible errors on the mastering side... but it just sounds like needless work that could be done away with by not even bothering with dual-layer blanks, which (it sounds like) no-one's going to (be able to) send, anyway.

no matter how you look at it.....dual layered DVDs are a pain in the ass and in almost every case more expensive

And nobody wants their video to be the unfortunate sacrifice during a layer switch. :P
