AMVNews (newsletter) feedback

Post by Kristyrat » Tue Jul 05, 2005 7:28 pm

Well, it's been a week since the Newsletter (AMVNews if you will) was released. I don't know about Resk, Anamorphic or any of the other people who put their time into contributing to this project, but I for one would really like to hear what people thought about it. Sure it was our first issue, and there were bugs galore, but that's to be expected. And since it was the first issue, I think some feedback would be really helpful. The main factor with the newsletter being that we can change things around. If there were columns you disliked, ones you think should be added, or just any other comments/rants you'd like to throw out there. And of course, we are offering a chance for you, the readers, to contribute with letters to the editor. You can gripe all you want there without it being public, and we'll probably publish it and ridicule you among a very large group of readers :P Of course, if you thought the newsletter was absolutely perfect, then I guess we won't change a thing

Who are you, and why would we have heard about your newsletter?
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

For those who did not know (god forbid) the first issue was released a week ago, and can be found off a link from the main page, or here:

That's Kristyrat. I'm Resk. Nice to meet you.

You would have heard about the newsletter through:
a) your e-mail (an e-mail version was sent out last week)
b) the newsletter link on the member page
c) a thread that was posted several days ago regarding the bugs in the newsletter

Besides the bug..

I am happy that I opened my mailbox that day, and seen an AMV Newsletter. I was thinking WTF?! Never seen one before.

I just like to say thanks for the links to the AMV's, I found some I had not seen, and well they where overall good. I hope that you all keep up the work, and keep sending this letter my way. It saves me in serching for a good AMV to watch.

Wow, some actual feedback! I'm amazed, thanks for the feedback Paris, it's good to hear that you found it to be somewhat useful. From the lack of replies however, it seems to me that people feel there is little to change, or they just don't care :?

It's not that we don't care...this is after all only the first issue. Most people don't even know about it - It's not mentioned in the "News" on the main page or on our member login page. And a brief forum thread about it can get buried very quickly. Having just an obscure little button on our menu list (which most people ignore) probably doesn't draw too much attention since it's not highlighted or anything. And as for the email notices, I wonder how many people even know about the button selection under their profile (edit) page to accept the newsletter?

My guess is that there's really nothing too critical about it. It's pretty basic text stuff and the few interesting articles so far are a good start.

Like AnimeFringe, the online anime magazine ... it will take time to gather readership. I'm sure if the AMV newsletter became more graphically oriented like them people would start taking notice. But let's focus on your content first.

Looking forward to Issue #2

I do agree with you that since it is the first issue that it is not very well known, but I think it's even more important for us to receive feedback and things people would prefer/want to change because of that. This is when we're most flexible and I sincerely doubt that people thought it was exactly what they wanted.

Actually, that might be a great idea, though I don't know if Phade or AD (not to be throwing any unwanted responsabilities on them of course) would want to put those things up there :/

this is true that it's somewhat hard to link to the newsletter, it is posted in multiple places, but not very prominently, I agree. As well as a forum topic getting buried, hell, I was about to rant another post if Paris hadn't said something, mainly because I feel the newsletter is far from perfect and since it's a newsletter for the AMV community, would it not be best to cater to their wants and needs?
rubyeye wrote:But let's focus on your content first.
that was pretty much the point of this entire thread. I think that I'm not alone when I say that more columns would be appropriate, but there's no point in making new columns if they don't please the readers, or aren't anything they're looking for IMHO.

Well, it's good to hear you're looking forward to the next issue and that you think we've started off on the right foot. I do appreciate your comments about the newsletter and this thread in general and it's nice to see someone taking an interest in this topic. I don't think I'm alone in the "staff" in wanting to know how the first issue was seen, liked and disliked. I guess that's why I seem to get worked up about this sometimes :P

I read it and I think that the layout is nice and organized. The only change that I think might be good would be on the up-and-coming/AMV reccomendations maybe have something like:

Romance AMVs of the weeks:
blah
Action AMVs of the week:
bleh
Comedy AMVs of the week:
blargh
Drama AMVs of the weeks:
blooo

Having that set up 1, ensures a bit of something for everyone and 2, having that format would kinda force the newsletter into having variety and maybe having to actively explore and look for AMVs of all genres.

Also I think it'd be cool to have a Dear Abby section about stupid AMV questions or AMV makers personal adds! Or "embarassing stories involving AMVs". .. . I have no shame in admitting that I read teen people. I'm a teed and I'm a people. -^_^-

You mean the "new and noteworthy" column? I'll try to respond to that and avoid any bias, heh. For me, that column is vids that I personally enjoyed. I'm not saying that my word is any good, but I'm a fan of action videos and ones that really work outside the box. The latter option working for pretty much any type of AMV. Though perhaps a column featuring the top videos (in all their respective categories) of the month. This could possibly be done through the star scale, or just through the AMV Announcements thread. Though of course, this would require more writers, and we are always looking for volunteers.

Heh, now that may be a really interesting idea, I think that's something we could build upon in later issues (once again if we can get a writer for it) and we could either have people email the editors (or writers for that matter) or we could have an entirely humourus article that includes fake letters (which I'm sure the "Dear Abby" ones are :P ) This idea does pique my interest however and I think it would be a great addition if we could get a writer for it and have all the kinks worked out.

Thanks a lot for the input, as I've said before I appreciate the input and I think all the others do as well. :D
