Re: Multi-source AMVs [SPLIT]
Is 'coherent story' necessary for a dramatic video? I've never heard that before. Most people seem to think (as can be seen by watching almost any recent 'character profile' video) that drama equals random face shots and a few angsty plot shots (some flashing scene that we recognize from the anime and know something important is happening to go with the face shots). Drama today seems to be all about matching scenes that carry the same emotion and 'theme' - with no care to any sort of story or deeper meaning than "she's crying in all the scenes so it's consistent emotionally and thematically". I can't remember the last drama video I watched that told a story.Kionon wrote:Very rarely can a creator, in my opinion, do enough with source material and song alone to make a coherent, dramatic story out of more than one anime.
Do you have a different definition of drama, or do you have a different word for those 'thematic, not story' based drama videos? Or is it just multi-anime drama vids that you think should be based on a story?
/now that the thread is in Gen AMV, you can talk about the topic without it being a personal debate

Re: Multi-source AMVs [SPLIT]
I believe most people are wrong. A coherent story SHOULD be necessary for a dramatic video, in my opinion. I do not believe "drama = random face shots". Certainly not focusing on entirely lyrical synch. Admittedly, I once did. I learned it was a mistake. A good example of what not to do is my first full video, Utena - Story of a Girl. It is just such a video you speak of. It is entirely made up of literal lyrical synch. It is not a coherent story, do not let the title fool you. It is all face shots with the obligatory Utena duel fights. I did integrate video game footage though, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it was pretty bad. Furthermore it had other, non-related issues like differing source qualities and subs... It is here, should you feel like being masochistic:Arigatomina wrote: Is 'coherent story' necessary for a dramatic video? I've never heard that before. I think all drama videos should be based on a story. I don't much like single-anime source videos made of random clips either. What's so dramatic about random clips? I need to feel something, and usually that means I need to be told to care. Can it be done without a coherent story? Yes. Often? No. Coherent story is what tells me I should care. But my point here is that most often your chances of getting a coherent story are reduced substantially as soon as you throw more than one anime into the mix. Unless you do something amazing. Which usually means building a coherent story with digital effects, etc. And... we're back around at square one. Most people refuse to take the time necessary to this.Arigatomina wrote: Do you have a different definition of drama, or do you have a different word for those 'thematic, not story' based drama videos? I'm not sure I understand your definition of thematic. I see theme as an addition to an already established storyline. One does be thematic alone unless it is a fun or comedy video. Case in point, Odorikuruu (Mamboleo). It wins. Why? Because it is fun, there is no need for a coherent storyline, just a theme, ie singing and dancing. This does not work in drama, in my opinion. I'll use my own AMV again for reference. In my KOR video the theme is photography. But had I attempted just to use the theme of photography without any storyline, it would have been beyond boring. Who honestly would have cared?
In addition, I never thought this was a personal debate in the first place.
