Bad OP out of Spite? Guilty or Innocent

Post by ANTDrakko » Thu Jun 02, 2005 5:08 pm

Man, my latest video has taught me more than I expected ^_^;

So recently, I particpated in one of the 1:1 opinion exchanges. One of them happened to be a bit flawed in a lot of areas. So, as a constructive critic should, I pointed these things out (such as DivX logos) in order to show the person what to try and fix next time around. Little did I know that it would effect their opinion of my own video.

The person went on to say similar things about my video that I said about theres. One of the funniest things was that they didn't like the "Divx logo" at the first couple of scenes. Little did they know, and as I later pointed out, that it was their machine which had the logos still turned on. Most of the opinions I've recieved, whether official or other, have all been praising and pretty much the exact opposite from this one.

So my question to everyone here is, have you ever given a biased opinion out of spite? Have you ever recieved one? The way it happened made it seem like it was a common thing. I'm curious to hear anyone's insights and *gasp* opinions on this subject ^_^.

Biased? Maybe. I've gotten a couple lousy ones. The people giving them said that it could be worse- that they have given straight 1's before. I have never given anyone a 1 in ANY category- nor straight 10's either.

Biased perhaps, cause I cannot stand overused anime/music. But out of spite- NO WAY.

Usually if someone has some problems with my op, I'll find out why they disagreed with my assessment. If I agree, then I'll adjust my scores acordingly (or not).

The only time it's ever been a problem on my end, I blanked the review, put it at all fives untill I could re-op the video. Seeing reply comments like "your review was like getting a spear jabbed into my face" sort of clued me in.

I've had the opposite quite a bit though, where I'll do an op and get all tens, even though my videos, while life changing and spiritually uplifting depending on your viewpoint are not really solid ten material.

Ask them to change it, or it it's all hateful and stuff post to the mod box.

some people would do that, i'm sure... that's why people shouldn't try to read the other person's opinion before they're done with their own. don't think it's happened to me, though. when i find problems in somone's vid and tell them to fix the problems and how, if i can, most people are generally nice about it and thank me.. i think.. lol

I'm sorry you feel I left the opinion out of spite...I didn't mean it like that at all. I just left an honest opinion of what I thought of your video. What was the matter with it? I didn't even put many negative points in I thought it was all constructive...nothing was out of spite at all, I felt the opinion you left me was fine and I took note of your criticism so I can improve on those next time round. The DivX logo thing I had no idea about, I’d never really encountered it before as I've only ever made two videos, and when you told me about it I immediately removed it from my opinion I'd left you and on the board admitted that it was my fault. If anyone’s doing anything out of spite I'd say you made this board out of spite because the opinion I left wasn't one you expected to receive.

I'm sorry you had to resort to making this board...

I've heard a lot about 'revenge ops' this year. It seems everyone who uses the op exchange comes away complaining about revenge ops. I've never gotten one. But then, I never gave my review first when I took part in exchanges, and it's been a good year since I did one - the pool of members posting in the op exchange has probably changed since then. I figure it was less common last year, my very long reviews discouraged revenge ops despite the low scores, or I just lucked out and got editors who could handle a little constructive feedback.

I gave an op in revenge for a repetitive flamer once (not an exchange, this was back in 2003 before I tried the forums, he just flamed me for making his favorite characters look gay :roll: ). He didn't respond to my responses, so I checked out his profile and got one of his vids to review. Since his flame made it look like he had no idea how to give a review, I went into explicit detail in the review I gave him, over 4000 words easily. I didn't lower the scores, though, so it was a legitimate review. I just vented my anger by being overly patient and a sickeningly helpful. Made me feel a lot better being the 'big person' in that little conflict. He never responded to the review, but he stopped flaming my vids for that anime, so that's something.

lol, this isn't personal archer. Its just odd how, coincedentally after I had left a less than favorable opinion of your video, that you leave one of mine that seem to be exactly opposite of many others'.

I could be wrong, but still, I'm curious to see if others have had similar experiences. The thread isn't "I hate you omfgwtfbbq!" . Its a way to find out if others have had the same happen.

::comfort::

No need to get worked up ^_^;.

I've gotten a review that was all negitive and I thought it was very helpful. A lot of times you have to hear the bad stuff about a video when you've got more all 10 ops then your ego can deal with.

There are really two parts to the issue:

1) people put a lot of work into videos and when they are disparaged the creator feels insulted and discouraged.

2) people care too much about scores (as did I until recently.)

The first one gets better with time as people begin to take a long view of things. The second one is somthing you should try to avoid. Unless your video is currently on the top 10% list they don't matter worth a damn and ops that use all those numbers below 7 are actually more helpful.

What your describing is someone who cannot take constructive criticism. My particular case was like someone saying that "That color is definately NOT blue" when it clearly is.

Because opinions are just that, you can "justify" just about anything simply saying "Well thats just what I see/feel" regardless of how incredibly doubtful that statement may be.

My question is: Have you KNOWINGLY tried to say something bad about a video when you know for a fact that your "opinion" is over the top, out of spite of a less-than-favorable review?

Like Arigatomina had mentioned before, I believe I notice a trend as of late from people and it discourages me from doing the whole exchange op thing.

The most important thing when you get a lame review on your possibly justifiably lame video is HOW YOU TAKE IT. You can either be just as uppity and pretentious about it as the guy who's knockin' you and make WHINY forum posts about it, take the advice to heart and cater to sour-puss, no-talent critics, or JUST IGNORE IT. Route #3 definitely saves your face in "public."
