Hah, yea, I'd actually say about the same...

As trythil said, this isn't about regulation. Do what you like; but don't expect the AMV community to suddenly love you for "breaking the code" and implicitly showing disrespect towards the hobby as a whole...

well if you can't buy the stuff what prevents you from download bittorent (a free program) and downloading the clips you need? and don't say it's because you have a slow internet connection I used to have that crappy 26 k bellsouth dial up crap, but I still downloaded clips from the show I wanted to do the video to.

Please note that we (the administration of a-m-v.org) do not condone the use of downloaded footage, music, or other copyrighted material in the creation of your AMVs. Do not expect to receive any help here towards the use of this practice in obtaining source materials.

If you respect this hobby, then please support the industries that provide the source material that you use in your AMVs by buying their products.

heres a question:

whats worse?? downloaded footage or stolen AMV footage??

at one point i didnt know how to rip a DVD but unlike some of the things I have read in this post, it didnt stop me from learning... granted I am blessed with a comp that has a DVD rom, so yea, guess I am lucky...

anywho, i have been noticing alot of Vid descriptions that just state: "thanks to other AMV creators, without them I wouldnt have footage for my AMV" or "i havent seen half of the Animes in my footage, but they came from great AMVs" and a bunch of stuff that screams "I STOLE FOOTAGE FROM OTHER AMVS"

I've also been downloading alot of CCS vids and very few of them are original in the slightest (and thats over 100 CCS vids) most of them have the same hashed up incest fest of clips..... its BORRING show me something new, not that you can steal something from someone else, and "make it your own" cause after watching about 10 of those vids, i am already getting bored... Same goes for Sailor Moon vids.

I guess if you have creator permission thats alright, but in most cases they dont... I mean I had a friend that wanted to do a Sailor Moon vid, so I ripped a DVD and sent him the footage via AIM, and he made a pretty cool piece out of it... sometimes it helps to have friends that can do it for you or can help out, and by pigeon holing yourself "well i have to do it this way" kinda defeats the purpose... get out and make friends, and who knows, one of your friends just might have footage for a vid you want to do.

In my mind, stolen is worse; at least you're crediting the original producers in some way.

Funny you should mention CCS in specific, I've made one amv featuring Sakura, and I had someone accuse me of stealing footage. Why would they say that when the quality was obviously dvd rips? Because I used the most important (and significant, and pretty) scenes in the anime - the same scenes that appeal to anyone making an amv for that character. I've never watched a CCS vid featuring Sakura before (I've only downloaded one CCS vid - it was for Touya and Yukito). I had no idea I was reproducing scenes to the point where I'd be accused of theft. My first response is this; If an anime has a limited number of significant scenes for a given character, any amv for that character is almost necessarily going to use those scenes. Show me a Vegeta-Goku amv that doesn't show clips from the Majin Vegeta fight (one of the most important aspects of their relationship, after the Frieza arc).

I know there's a huge rash of theft, but I don't want anyone to start thinking "they use the same scenes, they must have stolen them." First, I'd recommend you check the quality of the scenes - second hand footage does not look like dvd footage, even with filters. Second, check the order of the footage - if the scenes are in the same sequence they are in the anime, chances are good the person took that order right from the anime - not from another amv. Third, keep in mind the source anime being used - the scenes available are limited according to the anime (unless you use doujinshi, fanart, and manga scans to make up your own footage). Just because two CCS vids use the same scene of Sakura sprouting wings for the first time, that doesn't mean one of the creators stole from the other. It means they both used the same anime.

/pet peeve - the only time I've ever been accused of theft, all because I made a vid featuring a popular character. I never got that with my yyh vids, and the quality for most of those was much lower. ~_~

truthfully that would tick me off too, i have made about 4 CCS vids, and I understand what youre saying about the quality... and thats not exactly what i ment... not ALL CCS AMVs are stolen, as I am sure that none of mine are (all original creations by me, even the sucky ones cause i used the "fansubs")...

what i mean is that i see the same WB logo on the same clip in like 4-478892374 different AMVs, one can argue that they all had the same source footage, but none of their other clips have that logo AND some of their other clips have someone elses logo on them.... some have subs some dont (cept scenes that have no subs, those dont count, but i have seen the series enough times/own the DVDs I know generally what scenes have subs and what dont) and i see two scenes from say the same movie/episode that have two complete different resoulitions... ALL IN THE SAME AMV!! or i can recognize a sequence from another amv (that is ovbiously edited) in about 3 other AMVs... its pretty bad when you (not even being the original creator) can point out other peoples video clips in a stolen footage AMV... and i wouldnt "accuse" anyone without having a reference... and I am not saying that ALL CCS AMVs are stolen, just a good percentage seems to be, and filtering through them is the hard part. it also gets redundant and annoying....

not necessairly pointing fingers here, I am just using the Anime as a general reference, same goes for Sailor Moon... and more than likely InuYasha, I have seen a few clips of FullMetal Alchemist even taken, and Naruto... but ALL are popular animes... and when the video has ovbiously been degraded from the original AMV that also makes it more apparent...

I was just saying that its semi-annoying is all, and a good reason not to steal footage... using the same scenes isnt too bad, but using other people's edits is, cause more than likely I have already seen it before...

and i mostly mention it in specific cause I was told one of my CCS vids WAS actually ripped off, I have yet to find the culprit, but aparently their vid might have been taken down anyways... so I suppose it wouldnt matter...

hence why I have been downloading so many CCS vids lately... not to mention I like CCS lol...

i just yeled at someone like 10 mins again for stealing like five of my vids and combining them all into one... i've seen ppl do it before, but this was like the 20th person so that was it... mostly my inuyasha vids, i actually ripped a shitload of dvds for those, so the fact that anyone rips my inuyasha vids off is annoying.. but i dun care as much for the footage as for the edits, thats honestly wat pisses me off.. if another person takes my edits, i'm just goin to scream at them too.. because this person just took my transtions, my cuts, my scene changes, watever... it's not that hard to get ur own footage. i have no money but i manage somehow... some dvds, friends, bittorent... whatever. anything is better than stealing clips... u shuld at least put some kind of effort into gettin ur footage.. n into the high quality u'd want in a vid, which stealing amvs does not provide...
