Opinions
Recently I have been thinking back to the Org days when I first joined, it seemed then that people were giving out ops more freely and not from opinion exchanges. I also remember for a period I gave ops out not frequently but every so often out of good will but then I just sorta stopped and hardly ever gave them out. I feel this is the case with most users these days, ofcourse not all of them, there are lots of you out there who give lots of opinions and I salute you
but I feel the majority are like me: lazy >_<. So I've decided to change and give an opinion out at least once every two weeks although not everyone is going to do this so I suggest like with the star ratings to have a limit on how many videos you can download before giving one of those videos an opinion. Maybe 20 or less. I'm still unsure about this idea, there are lots of things you could pick at it with but you can do with it what you will ^_-. Thanks.

This is the first time I have suggested it and yes I do realise that, hence why I said that you could pick at it. I was more hoping for people to maybe contribute to it with ideas of there own to make it a little more solid but nevermind. I presume someone has already suggested this before me so you may as well lock this.

This is one of those really popular suggestions that gets shot down every time...like the "host our non-anime vids" or "give us an OT section" threads. Nothing comes from them, and after a while you go through all the possible arguments for (mostly against) the suggestion. It simply won't pass in its current state. You cannot force people to leave opinions the way we force them to pick a star. Now...if you compromise the suggestion, there's some negotiating room. As it stands, it won't happen.
Forced opinions tend to be short, written by people who begrudge having to write them. Having forced opinions will automatically lower the standard for opinions in general (positive - this will even out those who only review vids they love / negative - do we really want to deal with the "all 1s - I'm only reviewing this crappy thing so I can download a new vid that came out" flames?).
If it's obligatory, there's no motivation to do it well, or to put special care into it. Do you take a hand-held brush and make sure to get all the little cracks when you're washing the floor because it's your job? Not likely. If you're paid by the job you'll do the bare minimum. If you take pride in making the floor shine, and you're cleaning it to show how much you appreciate your mother's hard work, you'll take that extra time and get it as bright and clean as you can to help her out. That's the difference between doing something because you want to, and doing it because someone is making you do it.
That said, the day we're forced to leave opinions is the day I stop downloading local videos. I have enough trouble writing reviews when I actually want to leave feedback. If I were forced to write them, that bare minimum is all you'd get out of me. I'd just do a 'stock review' and paste it each time I was forced to write an opinion, with a little "liked it, didn't like it" tagged onto the end depending on the video.
/compromise
I can think of three alternatives that will get additional forced feedback for people who aren't satisfied with getting an obligatory star score from everyone who downloads.
1. Add an option to leave a 'numbers only' review. That would be as simple and quick (and standardized) as the star count. It wouldn't make the forced opinions splinter into the "I care, so I'm going to take this seriously" and the "I'm writing this because they're making me, so I don't care what I put down" factions. Those who don't think about the scores they give will give the same scores (and have the same effect on the top 10 list). Those who think about their scores (and normally explain them) can do a quick obligatory review without spending any more effort writing an explanation than the ones who don't think (so there's no disadvantage for them). Those who still like to give a long detailed and helpful review every once in a while can still do so whenever they want. The obligatory opinions will be an equal punishment (or chore) for the lazy as it is for the motivated. And no one will have to lower his standards in his reviews to account for writing a lot more than he normally would.
or
2. Get rid of the scores and the word count. Without scores, there's no need to explain anything. You can just write whether you liked it or not, and maybe toss in a word or two about why you liked or disliked it. The review won't make any difference with ranking (top 10 list), it won't make one reviewer better than another because he explains more (nothing to explain means less to write). It'll be a two or three sentence bit of feedback to go with the star score. And since star scores are annonymous, there's no issue of retaliation.
or
3. Make a 'feedback' thread for each video. Force everyone to write *something* each time he gives a star score. Keep it simple. Make it a "Explain why you liked or disliked this vid" question. It would not be connected to the star score (so those stay anonymous), but it would tell you who has watched your vid (unless we make it anonymous feedback to go with the anonymous stars), and it would give a few words of 'why' from each viewer without affecting the opinion system. This seems to be the easiest to implement - it would be like a hidden forum thread for each video, where the downloader has to make a post about the vid, and only the creator can see the thread. If you tossed in an option to reply to the posts, you could even have that discussion some people were wanting in the last "fix the op system" suggestion thread.
Personally, I resist change. I'd rather have a new feedback system forced on me, than see the existing 'free choice' review system turned into a chore.

That's an interesting idea. Maybe not with the star scale, but a seperate "quick comments" section or somesuch.Arigatomina wrote:2. Get rid of the scores and the word count. Of course, before getting too excited, it's going to be a while before its implemented; we're still working on getting the Programmer's group active
