Why do people rip off the vids of others?

Post by HeavyMetal » Fri May 13, 2005 12:48 am

There seems to have been a break out of vid rip offs lately.

I can't think of any reason why someone would claim credit for an AMV that they did not make.

It won't change their viewing pleasure.

The only prize to be won is satisfaction from a job well done.

If somebody has the knowledge to rip a vid, why not just make one?

My guess is that they're trying to impress their friends who don't know any better. Only reasonable reason I can think of.

Yeah I've noticed that too. Yeah I can't think of any reasons either. But Scintilla has a good reasonable reason. Thats the only reason I could think of as well.

You see this happening a lot in the fanfiction world as well. They just want success, popularity, and attention, like you see surronding the 'big names' in the fandom that they're stealing from. Of course, as soon as they start getting attention, people realize that they're just thieves, and then they get their asses kicked.

the logical answer is there's more videos to pick from to copy now. people think they can hide by picking a few to copy out of a million (or however many there are now)

back when there were only like 3 up on the org, it was a lot easier to tell I would imagine :)
AMVs that I have made:
Berserk - The Fight Must Go On - Drama, Action, Violent, Story
Teenage Cowboy Bebop Turtles(TCBT) - Fun, Trailer, Parody

When faced with the 'whys' of ethical issues, like clip and or entire vid theft, I always remember this, my favorite ethical debate of all time:

"Today at school, I tried to decide whether to cheat on my test or not. I wondered, is it better to do the the right thing and fail... or is it better to do the wrong thing and succeed? On the one hand, undeserved success gives no satisfaction... But on the other hand, well-deserved failure gives no satisfaction either.
Of course, most everybody cheats sometime or other. People always bend the rules if they think they can get away with it... Then again, that doesn't justify my cheating.
Then I thought, look, cheating on one little test isn't such a big deal. It doesn't hurt anybody... But then I wondered if I was just rationalizing my unwillingness to accept the consequence of not studying.
Still, in the real world, people care about success, not principles... Then again, maybe that's why the world is in such a mess. What a dilemma!"

"So, what did you decide?"

"Nothing. I ran out of time and I had to turn in a blank paper."

"Anymore, simply acknowledging the issue is a moral victory."

"Well, it just seemed wrong to cheat on an ethics test."

I wonder when we'll start seeing people trying to enter other people's vids into AMV contests at conventions. We should all agree that if this ever happens we will say nothing until the awards ceremony where we can rush the stage and beat the loser to a bloody pulp as an example to others.

narcted Agreed. (Never been to a con though.)

Coffee 54 seems like something of that sort was in a movie. Tests are just simple inaccurate forms of measurement. (That said by someone who does study.) An AMV is the final product. The result of that studying. That would be like cutting corners in an important job. Like a screw up at NASA.

Scintilla These people have friends?......dumb friends? And if they wish to impress them why not give them the AMV on CD rather then uploading it? (Suppose we would not know if they did.)

Friends do not have to be friends that you can meet face-to-face, and not everyone has access to their own host.

I'd like to ask you to drop the condescending attitude. Not everyone knows or can be expected to know the history of even a popular AMV. (Quick example: There are still some people who haven't seen dokidoki's "Right Now" video.)

Finally, Coffee 54's quote is from Calvin and Hobbes.
