Two-in-one topic: Manga and pianos.

Question 1: Has the inclusion of (scanned) manga images ever been used in an AMV well or effectively? What are your thoughts on the idea: Cool and edgy, or stupid and not well thought-out? Would an MMV be possible in your opinion? And no, don't bring up Doujin Addiction, because that's NOT what I'm talking about. I'm talking more along the lines of Garylisk's Growing Up and Closer, although using the manga certainly wasn't central to the video.

Question 2: What do you think works well with a piano piece? I'm not talking about songs that have a little piano interlude where editors go nuts with the piano keys effect (it's too expected by now, anyway), but actual entire piano solos that go on for entire minutes. Do you think there's a particular way you'd approach something like that? Do you have any examples of good piano solo AMVs?[/url]

I think the MADs are supposed to be all still pictures, whether it's manga scans or screencaps. They're supposed to be a thousand times better than any amv. I've never watched one myself, so I can't say how they're using the still pictures, but I haven't heard anyone say a bad word about them. There's a thread recommending specific MADs in the Rec section.

I've done a video that was a mix of scans and anime, mostly dj scans (not covers like dj addiction), but it was a slow video focusing on the footage rather than effects, and it's not something I'd recommend to someone looking for effects. Before I made that vid, I'd never seen an amv use scans. I've only heard of one other since then, and it was considered a MAD when it was announced here.

So...no, there are no amvs using scans, just MADs.

/as for piano

Keys and soft flashes of scenes seem to be the typical sync for pianos. Fade to and from black are what I've seen most often - just soft beat-sync.

I like variety, so I prefer the vids that break the piano section (if it's a long one) into little pieces and use a mix of different editing techniques. It doesn't get so monotonous that way, and it keeps my attention on the music and not repetitive flashes.

I've seen a decent number of manga-only videos, and I can't say I was impressed with any of them. It ends up feeling like a slideshow. Honestly, I'm not sure there's much you can do to prevent that kind of thing though. Even using effects/transitions, there's usually a noticeable lack of action.
I won't venture an answer for the second, however, as instrumentals are far from my area of expertise.

There should be a thread somewhere your question was clearly answered, but you can check the interview of Pianos into the main page, they talk about it.

As far as I know, Mad are just amvs made by Japanese. They call amvs "mad" (don't ask me why), with another difference, they developed 2 different kind of "mad", with 2 different names:
1) Douga MAD = that is the equivalent of ours amvs.
2) Seisiga MAD = a mv where there are still pictures.

Basicly, including manga scans is like any other effect; if done well it will contribute to the video, and detract if done poorly.

Arigatomina's is the only manga based video that I can recall off the top of my head.

As for piano solos. Many full length piano pieces are incredably emotional, I think the best way to do it is not to over edit and have very good mood synch. An example would be Downwithpants's Tomoe in the Moonlight.
