I think cute or humorous moments can integrate well into a dramatic video if done right.
/this coming from a guy who put a humorous clip with a cow into an otherwise serious video.
An important decision regarding dramatic execution.

For a good example of this check out the first version of Forbidden Memories.
It all depends on the song and anime but I would say it's possible. If it is a lost love video one thing I've seen done to great effect is the reminicance. In between the sadness and the crying and what not you show a really happy episode from the past. Some people like to slow it down or use grayscale or blurring to emphasize the diference, that would make it seem less jarring.
Generally I agree with Rubyeye though, smiling or laughing can be bittersweet in a sad video but SD might be too much.

I agree that it could work depending on a few variables. If the anime has alot of humerous scenes in it, a little humor thrown in relevant to the anime and story you are telling could possibly work as a little comic releif. Ofcourse I wouldn't use something totally blurt out laughing humerous, but maybe something to give a little chuckle, (like "haha I remember that from the series" type thing) but It depends on if the song and anime type calls for it IMO.
As a quick and dirty example, if the video is a serious love story about a clumsy girl and a guy, suddenly showing the girl smash into a wall or something during a flash back of happy times together, could possibly work as a little comic releif for the video, especially if the girl is known as being extreamly clumsy in the anime. This is just 1 example. I think anything like this could work, given the song allows for it without disrupting the mood too much. [/i]
