I've just got to chime in and say that I think referring to other people's videos is probably one of the least productive things you can do in an op.

It's effectively saying "Yeah, whatever you did sucks in comparison to this other guy." Every time I see it happen, it doesn't do anything other than cut the editor down and basically wank the guy who made the video in reference.

I've got to agree with Godix here. It's not necessarily the creator's fault if they get high scores, especially if they did not solicit those reviews. Generally, unsolicited reviews (at least in my experience) are left by people who are really impressed with a video- they only op if it's memorable. Hence, the high scores. Thus, it's not really fair to say that just because a video has high scores, the creator is not interested in hearing your opinion. They might actually want some constructive feedback rather than "OMG that roxored here have straight 10s".

I say to still leave your opinion as long as it is constructive and it tells them why they are getting a 6 on their video then its okay. I normally do a breakdown review. Scene by Scene and say if it fit or what could have improved it. Good story but not enough lyrical sync. My reviews arverage about 1,000-1,500 words. It takes me an hour to do a review. So you'll always get a quality and fair review from me. Also I'm a little leanent on somethings. Anyway getting back to your subject I say go ahead do it . The creator will apreciate your feedback as long as you give it some detail.

The way I approach giving an opinion, is give an opinion that is equal to the kind of opinion you would like to recieve on your videos, regardless of good or bad scores.

Ah, the Opinion Wars!!!

Just leave nicely constructive, specific, honest opinions all the time, every time. I've left more opinions to people here on the org than almost anybody and I'm not a useless opinion writer either [unless the vid gets all 9s/10s, how do I write some constructive criticism when there's little/no flaws?]

Thing is, those of you who fear "revenge opinions" are probably the ones prone to do it yourself. All a revenge opinion will do is get you to ask the moderators to remove them. And blam, problem solved!

There are more respectable new/old editors here on the org then trolls and jerks who hate opinions that make them look bad. I don't remember ever receiving a revenge opinion even when I gave scores in the very low end category.

Just write what you think is best and what would help yourself out as well as the person you're reviewing and you should be fine. I don't think it's being fair to yourself if you can't give out your honest feeling on how crappy/phantastic a video can be...

btw: 5 is the best average to score with, not 7. What is this? Grade school scores? ^^

There are plenty of people who understand constructive criticism out there. I know I sure do.

Like for my video I didn't put 2 opinions that gave me straight 10's, I put up one "THIS WAS AWESOME!" and then I put up the constructive critisim one.

If people are just looking to inflate their ego's and only want to hear super positive things no matter what the quality of the vid is then they really shouldn't post their vid's (Or at least ask for opinions).

My Vid got #'s taken down for re-view, Digital effects (I don't like too many personally, but anyway...)and Capture quality the most. Those things are also what I get the most "It could be better" messages about.

You know what that tells me? It tells me I need to edit better and rip the movies using the AMV guides better!

I get 9's and 10's for originallity ALL the time. 8-10's for effort.

You know what THAT tells me? I DO have unique ideas and that I am putting the right amount of effort in.

People like myself NEED people like you to help us get better. Rate it whatever you feel and explain what you think needs to be fixed. It makes the community better and helps set up less crappy videos in the future. And we ALL want to see that..

Most of the time I dont care much for scores in OP's as long as I get a good constructive comment.

When I upload my AMV's I really don't care what the score if. I figure most people will either love it or hate it. It's just something I do in my freetime.

Time for the "opinions are broken" follies!

Just to be clear, I have not and would never give a "revenge review", nor do I fear getting them. It just doesn't matter to me.

I do fault myself for not being a very patient person. It doesn't take too many occurences like the examples below to frustrate me and put me off doing reviews.

Pictures have been altered to provide anonymity to the guilty.

This vid has four reviews, total. But wait, there seems to be a great disparity in the scoring! how can this be????
Whee, jerking myself off with sock puppet accounts is fun! fap fap fap...

Note the scores, and the reaction. To be fair, the bottom 40% of the general section comments by me were added after the creator's comments, with very specific examples, including .png's of references I'd made in my earlier comments, which did contain specific advice about how to fix the problems I found. No further response from the creator after that.
Look, I'm a terrible reviewer!

Here is the the deep thinking genius of that creator's exchange review. Note that the video's description and opening credits clearly state that it is part of a compilation of short amv's done to short songs.
It should be longer!

I've gotten some very helpful and insightful ops, and done my very best to give the same quality, but enough situations came up like the above to just plain irritate me out of wanting to bother.

If you worry because you score lower than the videos 'average received' then there's a quick consistent way around that. Don't look at the reviews received until after you write your review. And don't change your scores if you find them 'off' from the norm for that particular video. If you don't know ahead of time that everyone else gives the vid 10s, you won't be influenced - you can give what *you* think it deserves.

That's clear unaffected feedback.

If you get complaints, just explain why you gave what you gave (if you didn't already explain that in the review).

Don't worry about revenge ops and things of that nature. The forum has established that even if you give someone a straight 1s flaming review...if he flames you back you can just edit yours to 'okay 5-6 range' scores and turn *him* in to the admins. He'll get punished and your review gets to stay up on his video.

[Note: If you don't give all 1s - which are very difficult to explain since even those videos that *strive* to be the 'worst amv ever' rarely end up in the all 1s range - then this won't be an issue. So long as you're giving reviews and not flames, you have nothing to worry about.]
