Starting with the obvious: SPOILERS ALERT!!!!!

now then...

Lemme save certain members from posting everything they have read and possibly screwing it up anyway.

Anime Insider did a very good job explaining some of the more basic questions of Evangelion in thier January 2004 issue. Read this, ALL of it, and it should clear up those things, plus a few others you may have wondered about.

BTW..i just realized that article didn't explain LCL so, according to the NGE Wikepedia page:

LCL. It is frequently stated that LCL stands for "Link Connect Liquid", but Gainax has stated this is incorrect. The LCL fluid may also be compared to the amniotic fluid in the mother's womb, (even though this fluid is not breathable) and all the mother references that the main character has in the story. In the series, it is described to be like the primordial soup of life that existed on prehistoric Earth.

This article is pretty accurate, and it should be, considering the writer.

It is written by Taliesin Jaffe, who not only did the English subtitling (as the article mentions) but also joins Amanda Win Lee (Rei Ayanami) and Jason Lee (Aoba) on the commentary track for both of the Neon Genesis Evangelion movies Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion.

(Jaffe is currently working with Geneon on the English adaptation of R.O.D. the TV.)

While there is a sea of LCL underneath Lillith in the chamber that Nerve has her in, we also see LCL running down the cross on which she is cruicified. Is this Lillith's blood? ambiotic fluid? It is definately from Lillith. Plus, everyone on the planet had their bodies revert to LCL during third impact. While not breathable itself, it can transmit oxygen to the Eva pilots while in the entry plugs. It can have its oxygen depleated as in the case of Shinji while lost in the Sea of Dirac.... Shinji also comments while immersed in it that it "smells like blood"...(foreshadowing where it comes from?)

When End of Evangelion premiered in Japan, audiences were treated with a program guide called "The Red Cross Book". It contains not only many production notes from the design team, but a glossary of terms for the series and movies. :D http://www.motorballer.org/redcross.html

LCL stands for Lateral Collateral Ligament. Its a ligament that connects the lateral epicondyle of the femur with the lateral side of the head of the fibula and that helps to stabilize the knee by preventing lateral dislocation. It's also called fibular collateral ligament.

Thanks everyone for rehashing the article in the wonderfully pointless way i was hoping to avoid by posting it in the first place. Except for bum, who always manages to keep his sense of humor. :p

Thanks for the article, Mandy. Damn good read.

NERV means Nerve in German. Gihern (don't know how to spell it, haven't watched Eva in a couple of months... I should go for my sixteenth watch) means "brain" in German, I do believe. There are some other German words in there, as well, but I don't remember them.

It's spelled Gehirn. SEELE means soul and EVA is Eve.
