Nickname Lookup
[ this is not related to the nickname change thread ]
Even if it was really simple (like a reference, not linked to anything),
there should be a database containing, account #, nick used, nick start date, nick end date
For anyone that has made a video.
Here's a practical example why:
Let's say member "Trait" makes a video in 2002 called "Breathe". I download it, and name it "Trait - Breathe.mpg"
Now in 2003, "Trait" goes through a transformation, and asks for a name change to "Habri". Name isnt taken, change goes through fine, and the user continues to make videos.
Now me, in 2004, try to look up "Trait"s info... no member! Maybe I don't know the anime in the video, or the song, but I like it nonetheless, and all the video gave me was the nickname "Trait". I could look up the title of the video, but if it's a popular song, there's going to be 20-40 videos with that match!
So in this way, creators can `disappear', and that's why I think a simple lookup tool on a nickname to see who might have (could be more then one person) held it in the past would be usefull.

And what if the reason some change nicknames is to avoid this identification?
There are cases like that which I'm aware of; so perhaps this ought to be something of an optional feature, if at all...

Not to me, at least. When you make a name change, as far as I know, that's all it is.post-it wrote:unless, along with the name change, the older AMV can be erased and a newer
one can take its place - with the newer names on and with the AMV's
did that make any sense?
Your account ID stays the same.
If my understanding of how the name change occurs is correct, these people are NOT going to do a name change on their account, because their account ID stays the same, so if the person say... bookmarked their profile page, they can still access with the new name.Otohiko wrote:And what if the reason some change nicknames is to avoid this identification?
These people would likely create a new account, and notify a mod of why their situation of duplicate accounts is unique. They may or may not duplicate their videos, because if they did, this would also make them traceable. So this point is moot.

Well, no, I could actually cite one case, but I don't want to reveal any identities. It's possible, especially if factors outside the .org are involved...
Erm, anyway, I'm sure that doesn't happen frequently; but neither do significant name changes among well-known editors, actually. AFAIK, most requested name change by editors have just been modifications of existing names or studio names.
But anyway... suppose that's up to the administration.

I believe you are misunderstand how the system works. If you need further clarification after this, please pm me and we can discuss it, and reply here when we've agreed on a new stance.Otohiko wrote:Well, no, I could actually cite one case
The identifying thing for your account, the thing that never changes, is the ID number. For example, user ID 126 is Big Big Truck. You can see this in the profile url:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... ser_id=126
So if you bookmark someone's profile, you are accessing them via their ID, not their nick. The nick is superficial. If you change the nick, you still have the same account! It's still easy to find you! Especially if you've made a video.
So if you want to use a name change as a anti-harassment method, you would instead create a NEW account, not simply rename your current one. your current one would still sit there, holding whatever videos you had created.
If you add the videos you had created to your new account... it's a lot easier to find your new account. But that's moot, because at that point you have 2 ID's, and the nick database WOULD NOT register this because it is using two DIFFERENT IDs.
The nick database I am requesting is only for nick changes based on the SAME ID.
I hope that clears it up. This is not a concern with a nick database. Alternatively you can find me in the irc channel.

The idea of protecting those who make a new account in order to 'start fresh' is a moot one. That's against the rules and most of them have been revealed, even if they choose to stick with the newer name. In fact, if that 'account consolidation' ever pans out, they won't be able to hide anymore - the two accounts would be merged. Personally I think these accounts should be at least linked to one another until they can find a way to merge them - at least for the people putting videos on local under different names.
This is a catelogue, and even Richard Bachman pops up when you do a search for books by King - that's the way catelogues work, they connect aliases with the creator whether he wants to hide his double accounts or not.
If you make a new account and put videos on it, and you already have an old account with videos, the two should be linked - for the sake of the database, and the rule against multiple accounts (for whatever reason).
I know that's not the point of this thread. For people who change their account names, maybe something could be added to the search - sort of like we have for anime titles. Where if you type in Inuyasha it asks "Did you mean Inu Yasha?" Instead, when you type in Paulo it will ask "Did you mean Katsumi AMVs?" (I think that's his new name...I'm still not used to it yet. ^_^;; )
The main idea of identifying nicknames is for people who use the search functions, so a helpful add-on linking nicks with new names (the way we link misspellings with proper anime titles) should do the trick.

I really don't see the big problem.
A few people bugged me after I switched my name on the forums but I was already using this name in the chat rooms and was getting tired of having to say "On the forums it's Sousaphonist" even though that was a GREAT name...
Plus it's what I use in my video bumpers so it just removes all confusion.
If you can't find a person after a name change they probably don't want you to. Or you just aren't looking hard enough....
