what you look for in a drama AMV...

Post by Wong » Tue Nov 02, 2004 2:51 am

When you look at an AMV, if its in a con or not, what do YOU constitute as a Drama AMV? suspence? love? lots of crying? Because I am a part time actor, so i know i have a diff deffinition of drama then you all....but my latest vid, i am having issues on what category to put it in...because it has very little action, no romance, and is not a comedy(in my opinion anyway).....but is a reflection of all the good points in the characters life.....

I call this drama....but if i submit it to a con, i don't want everyone to vote bad because they did not think it fit the category

If it conveys the intending emotion, whether it be romance, tragedy, heroism, etc.

Also, if it conveys it well.

May be it is a charcater profile.
If you are centering your AMV on a specific character and telling a story from its point of view or you are just portaring what or who that character is then you might be looking to a charcater profile AMV.

Drama
For me Drama in an AMV is when all the animes (or the anime) trasmite the same feeling. You can have crying sences, kiss scenes, hugging scenes, ect. You can include comedy if you want but on my prespective that would lower the dramatic level of your drama AMV. You say you are an actor so you should know that a good actor acts and a better actor trasmites feelings to the audience. I know this because I am a film director.

true, and yet, if you have a bunch of funny scenes, and yet it is more of a montage of this characters happy points...reguardless of how you transmit the feeling to the audiance, a lot of them are just going to think it was a well put out comedy. I think the way i am going to have to fix this is with my song choice....The Royal Tenenbaums was a good film doing this, comedy, yet a choice of score that not only made you laugh, but showed the feeling the actors were trying to portray in more depth.....

i will just have to use my choice of footage, and my choice of audio to wrap you up in this....

Yes!!!
But it also depends on the character you want to base you AMV.
If this character is a funny character by nature they it is not only a comedy AMV but it also is a charcter profile because the character itself is funny. (Ex. Excel) Excel is a funny character making a character profile of this charcter would end up also beeing a comedy. Other charcters that are serious (Ex. Love Hina) This is a serious character if you only put the happy sences on the AMV then it would become a comedy AMV rather than a charcater profle because the character itself id serious.

It depends entierly on the character you choose and how that charcter is.

The main issue here though...is my character is going to be Vash.
So, he is funny, and yet he is serious.....at the same time. This video is not going to be a HAHAHAHAHOMG MY STOMACH HURTS comedy...yet it will have some comedic scenes in it. I am trying to show him in a reflective state, you know...like a..."I have no regrets" kind of thing....not much of the bad things that happened to him will be in it, but a short 3 mins on how he is glad for all these things in his life that have happened, because these are the things that helped me along......so, i guess its a character profile, BUT, not many cons have that as a category...so this is my dilema.

Its not a funny vid, but its not the most dramatic vid....and i have no idea what fence to ride.

A Drama AMV must be very emotional and sad with a lot of crying people.
There musn't be any romance.

I guess this doesn't really apply to Vash as much, but I really don't see why a drama can't have romance, too. What about the tragedies of love? Heartbreak? I consider that drama.

I think the song chosen is an extremely important aspect to your vid. Something heartwrenching, perhaps?

My studio partner, Jasper-Isis, created this video a while back, and I believe its a strong example of drama. Forbidden Memories. It has romance, lightheartedness, and vengeance...all in less than 3 minutes.

Ultimately it's up to you on whether or not you think your video is a drama. It could have all the aspects listed in this thread. A good idea might be to have someone beta before uploading it to the .org, and ask them their opinion.

Good example, I'd also throw out "Sex Lies and Roses" and "Deceptive Passions" as good romance-gone-bad dramas.

For me a drama comprises the darker half of human emotions. I would call your vid Sedimental, the category we do not have... yet. :P

See the thread in site suggestions for more info.

Or all at once
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.
