Thanks for bringing the subject back on topic. I think the overuse of particular anime's seems to be a direct coralation to how well it lends itself to action sync in a concept. Thus anime's with proliferation of slapstick moments are those which top the overused animes for comedy, and certain animes lend themselves directly to action. Drama's the only category where overuse of series is rare.

Many people who get into music video editing have to begin with NLE technique and action syncing as thier first focus. To them, a music video begins as laying music they think fits an anime well and then synchronizing to it. There's very little concept or planning other than "and then at the part of the song where the singer says 'crawling on my skin' I'll have Ashitaka's arm with all the wiggly worms" and about 2 other shots picked out that match other individual lines. Not a concept so to speak.

Drama is typically a last frontier for many creators since the video is an expression of concept more than technique.

[quote="Sousaphonist"]But timing beats just seems on it's face to be easier than trying to build moods or generate comedy.quote]

Depends. For me it's a lot easier to achieve mood than achieve good timing. Besides, people have different thoughts about good timing. Sometimes I run into videos that have fairly high sync scores and they're just, uhm, weak. :?

Well... the scoring system here isn't like olympic gymnastics. There aren't standards for deduction and a requirement for conference if numbers vary by more than .2 points. Judging here is 100% relative to the viewer and a 10 for some is a 5 for others and I don't put any stake into them. From what I've seen, the only number that is fairly consistant indicator of a good video is the reviewability score. It's the only one where the average score given seems to be less than 9 by the majority of the reviewers.

I think what's most interesting is that with these so-called "over-used" action shows... there's so much footage that's simply NOT being exploited... and SHOULD be.

(With the possible exception of EVA and comedy, of course... that's pretty well exploited)

"Action" really just hits the (unfortunately/sadly/broad-demeaning-generalization) "lowest common denominator" in terms of viewers. It's what they know, it's what they're familiar with, and it's what they want to see. There's a ton of ignored footage that could be used for other purposes (or at least taken out of context); I'd love to see more of that done.

Now... how many anime's fit that genre and are widely popular to people who watch anime and think to themselves "Wow.... what a bad ass explosion!" or "That was so cool!" when someone's head is chopped off and blood squirts everywhere?
Shitcocks took my idea!

The underused anime debate, eh? I find one thing more annoying than overused anime. It's the overused sequences in overused anime... And Yes, I can't spell. 846930.4 AMV's using the same anime, same sequences, same type of song, same type of editing, same type of losers making them makes it kind of boring, for some strange reason. Even if I find that annoying I somehow don't care if my own AMV's are original in any kind of way. That may be 'cos I just do it for fun! Hmmm...

That happens to be a pet peeve of mine which has made me stop watching romance videos entirely. I've seen multiple love hina videos where 60-70 percent of the scenes were identical. I guess people really like certain scenes that are highlights of the story, but if I havn't seen the anime it gets repetitive fast.

This happens for action videos too, Alucard Vs. The Iscariot preist anyone?

Well everyone just uses cool action scenes for action. So for short series of course youll see many scenes over and over.
