Problem with the Star Rating System

Thanks for the help guys, I think I'll try out some of the suggestions. The main error I kept getting was, instead of the download starting when I click on a link, I get redirected to some "Windows Error" webpage, and the left-hand Windows Media Player (integrated in Internet Explorer) would open up. Hopefully that won't happen again.

See, this is exactly the attitude that has made me quit taking my star ratings seriously. If people weren't so afraid of looking bad and would admit they actually do attach some importance to it then I would too. But instead most of the times I get the odd combo of the seeing banners whining about not getting enough ratings while the forums are full of people taking the 'I'm so cool and artistic I don't give a damn about ratings' attitude. It gets old quickly and, big suprise, it's a large part of why I've quit giving ops entirely and started treating the star system like a joke. If you disagree say so and quit worrying how you'll look. There's absolutely nothing bad about saying "the star ratings have value because..." anyway.Scintilla wrote:I so want to respond to this, but there's no way I can do so that won't make me look bad.

I want to appologize to Scintilla. The orgs two-faced attitude on feedback has been annoying me recently and he happened to have said something that set it off. I'm sorry about the tone of my message Scintilla, that mini rant wasn't meant to be personal but rather directed at the site in general and even so I should have kept it to myself.

Well, I mean... whenever it's come up, I've been fairly open about how much I do in fact worry about star ratings and opinion scores. It's just that now I happen to be at the top of the list, and I get the feeling that no one would want someone with that attitude at the top of the list, and I bet I can't say a thing about this whole issue without somebody seeing it as gloating.

Wait! That's not a codec error, that's a typical Internet Explorer error. Totally different problems.Kiyoshimiko wrote:Thanks for the help guys, I think I'll try out some of the suggestions. Clear your cookies. Right-click your Internet Explorer icon and hit 'clear cookies,' hit 'delete files' and 'settings', then 'view files' and manually delete any cookies that remain. Then try the download again and it should work normally.
Another way around the problem is to download a different browser - Opera works well if you want to resume local downloads, and it's free of course:

In Summary...
a-m-v.org encourages social reciprocity - Star ratings (for locally-hosted videos) are mandatory; opinions are optional, but highly encouraged by the community.
Codec compatibility issues - There are videos that can't be viewed on some computers, and it's always a question of whether or not you have the codec. BUT...that presents a dilemma for the social reciprocity of the star ratings, especially since the stars can block you from further downloads if ten local vids go unrated.
Solution - Keep the vids, leave a 3 (a "placeholder", I think it's called), find the codecs you need in this mad Internet world, go back into your "Downloads" list, update your star ratings, bing-bang-boom.
And a sidebar...it just seems there's no middle ground in this crazy world of confidence, modesty, egotism, cynicism, et al. But that's another discussion for another day.
Tea and cake are on the table in the back; train schedules are posted on the north wall.

just out of curiousity, is the star system taken seriously by most anymore? some seem to, but then i hear about the attitude of "i dont care about the rating" i think it was designed with good intentions, its just the integrity of it is ruined by giving random ratings. its not even so much about whether you loved the video, hated it, or just dont care about the creator, it's common courtesy. they put that much effort, however small it might be, and submit it, at least they try although there are excepts, such as those who steal the videos of others. is it really that much effort to take 5 minutes to watch the video and evaluate it? then again, common courtesy to others seem's to have disappeared in seemingly every other aspect of the world, why should this site, or any other, be exempt?

well viewing videos mite be and overlay problem if your using WMP you stuck but if you use like BSplayer you can switch the rendering types and messaround with it. cuzz even though overlay is fast its very limited, can only be displayed on 1 monitor and can only run 1 video at a time. anyway thats just my idea.
