Artists have a set style. They'll vary for certain characters
much like the artists from Cowboy Bebop and Wolf Rain

Should I get out my Pointed Stick of Subjectivity yet?

One man's ridiculous is another man's uber-cool...

Not to say I've ever been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh's hair designs, but that's beside the point.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I wish I could draw, I just had the best mental picture of you EVAR!

And I agree whole heartedly with Ari about the (Sailor Moon) face design thing, usually the only thing that does in fact change is the hair/eye colour.

An example:

Another prime example would be the art of Yu Watase, who's character designs are ridiculously similar to the point that unless you recognize which work each is from or saw it in colour...you could easily think two different characters from different works were one and the same.

Heh, I liked the pic, even if it was big. I knew a woman once (she was in her late 40s back then) who'd been collecting all things Sailor Moon for years and scanning through the little laminated pictures and artbooks, I couldn't distinguish the characters at all. They all had that same flow for the hair, same faces - the style wasn't 'individual' enough for a lamen to go in and spot one from another. That's where I first noticed it.

I don't stick with artists who've done multiple series often, but I noticed it with Toriyama -

Hiei from YYH
http://www.geocities.com/kenshin9365_yyh/hiei.html

and Killua from HunterxHunter
http://www.geocities.com/kenshin9365_hxh/killua.html

The color is different, and Killua has shorter hair, but there's that same starburst (seen best in the little pic of Killua), and the eyes and 'heartshape' chin are replicas. Of course, the characters themselves are similar as well, but on looks alone they'd be close - if Killua wasn't an albino version of Hiei. ;p

Oh god yes. I remember once seeing an Ayashi no Ceres pic that had two guys in it that I at first thought were Tamahome and Amiboshi in modern outfits...

alot of the CLAMP characters are similar as well, especially the guys. The irritating thing there is the fact that the hairstyles are normal. Even Natakus hairstyle borders on acceptable as a "normal" 'do. So you can imagine my confusion when I sat down at my local anime club for a screening and X came on. The series, that is. It was at episode 13. I swear to god, i was as confused as hell because at that point, to me, Kamui, Fuma and Subaru all looked the same to me. Add that to the confusion of Fuma being called Kamui, and me not understanding why, and yeh, you can see why I initially didnt like that series.

But in anime like they use much more subtle details to tell between similar-looking characters.
