Anime Mid-Atlantic AMV 2004 contest resolution?

Post by Brakus » Sun Jun 06, 2004 10:21 pm

I write this with the realization that I am going to ruffle quite a few feathers with my comments.

Anime Mid-Atlantic's AMV contest was full of problems, especially on the first showing on Friday night at 10pm. The videos were running off of a laptop because the DVD backup of the contest wasn't available at the time.

And because of this, a number of entries - including mine - suffered slight problems with the audio/video sync. Two entries had the unfortunate mishap of freezing up, either the audio or the video, during the primary showing. I saw the look of horror on one of the video creators when it happened, and I could not help but feel sorry for him as he stormed out of the place. He had worked so hard to make the video look very good and worlds better than how it came out at NekoCon.

Moreover, the contest itself couldn't stick to its own rules about content and what is acceptable/excessive. Two videos made the final cut for the contest that shouldn't have on Friday night; one was caught for the Saturday/Sunday showings, and the other one went under the radar.

Also, a lot of videos were listed under the wrong category - there were some drama videos that should have been action and at least one action that should have been comedy. That, however, is partly the fault of the creator for their choice of category, but at least the AMV staff could have advised them about the appropriateness of the category the contestant wished to enter his video in.

I brought up these problems at the feedback session, as did other people who were there, and I'm confident that this is being taken care of for next year's contest. What concerns me is that the folks who put together the contest for AMA also do the contest for NekoCon also. If their lack of effort and dedication for the AMV contest that was apparent at AMA is going to be repeated at NekoCon, then other AMV creators are gonna get hosed or screwed over.

So my questions - will there be any winners announced for the AMA AMV contest this year? What happens in situations where the showings are screwed up in some way? Is there any way we can make sure AMV contests are run competently?

I'm sorry if I'm ruffling any feathers here, but as a contestant who played by the rules and still somewhat felt cheated, I'd like to get some answers.

Hmmm. I didn't enter nor was I there, but I just wanted to commend on this whole category issue... I starting to conclude that the drama/Actions/Comedy type categories are becoming all too blurred. Problem with that is that then contests are blamed to having too many videos miss categorized.

Now what should be considered is in a lot of videos it can go a lot of different ways, so it becomes comes subjected to each individual if it is or isn't in the right category, but it seems to always fault more with the contests and that's in some cases a tad unfair.

I got one better for you. The guy that was responsable for fucking our videos up not only does the AMV contest for NekoCon, but he is the guy IN CHARGE of NekoCon. Period. How's that for bullshit.

I was Video Game staff for AMA this year and submitted 2 videos myself. Super (Freaky) Hero was decimated completely. It was rediculous. The 1st 30 seconds of the video was cut and the rest of it was off sync by a full measure or so. Perfect Trip was subbmited to 'Action' as detailed in the entry email I sent, and ended up in Drama/Romance. What the fuck? I was livid to say the least.

And I also discovered that every single video that was submitted reguardless of HOW it was submitted was reencoded. The worst part? I have a good feeling that they were all reencoded to WMV format. That's retarded to say the least.

On a positive side after speaking with Ed, his wife, and James, (the 3 heads of AMA) I can say for sure that that idiot will not be invloved with shit at next years con. They were dead furious once Me and my fiancee' and friends informed them of what happened. (immediately following friday night's showing)

There is a staff meeting coming up and I plan to make sure that I make good suggestions as to what should be done to improve things next year. If you want me to bring up anything, post it here, and I will do my best to let the higher ups know.

I already personally know what the results of the contest are, but they are waiting to tabulate the results of a few other things before posting them to the site. If you thought the contest was fucked up before, wait till you get a load of the winners list. I'm not going to give it all away, but I will say that the videos were never pre-judged. So forget all that Best Techincal/Best Begginer's/Etc. stuff. That never happened. According to Martin (the asshole who ran the AMV contest this year) the winners were decided 100% by audiance votes. woot. And the prizes are easily the worst part. I don't even want to go there now.

But rest assured, Next year will kick the shit out of this year if I have anything to do with it. I refused to sit back and watch this shit happen next year. After the staff meeting, I'll come back here and let you know what was discussed...

A travesty and a sham and a mockery to good AMV creators everywhere. For me -- for ANYBODY -- to lose to a very crappily edited and slip-shod video is honestly a travesty, a sham, and a mockery. If that was announced at the convention in May, there would have been some serious mixed reactions, mostly negative.

If it's any consolation, Martin Matthews will not be running next year's AMV contest. That, and I already won an award at Anime Central for my video.

I saw that one. The only reason I saw all of it was because I had no choice. That thing was more of a claim to have entered a contest than an AMV. I'm ashamed to have watched it let alone be the person to have made it.
