Hmm. I must have missed, or forgotten, about that.
Probably too busy to be here right now.

I always figured it was put in for the sake of confirming the shot killed him (given the way it fades out as he's going down)

As for why they did it that way...honestly, not sure...perhaps they felt it would be fitting in the Tezuka art-style

ok, that's wierd. When in the show was that?
The sword, it thirsts to drink of man,
The sword at last must win,
Today is gone, and yesterday,
Must echo in the wind.

Well, I noticed it when I first saw the movie, but it really didn't matter to me. I thought the same thing that Heero_Yuy84 thought, that it meant that the shot killed him. And, maybe it did fit the Tezuka art-style.

That would be a symbol meaning "damn I'm totally freaked out." OR "I'm worried"

It appears a lot in the Metropolis Manga. It's like a sweatdrop, and I suppose it is a candel.

I believe the guys who made this movie may have been aware of a North American metaphor I saw used in the Wolverine #-1 comic book. Creed (who was later to become Sabretooth) puts a gun to Logan's head and tells him:

"You may be the birthday boy, but I'm the one who gets to blow out your candles."

(Logan was the center of everyone's attention in that particular story, hence the crack about his being the "birthday boy.") What we have here is a literal portrayal of a figure of speech, much as anime characters are sometimes literally floored by a remark. (Such borrowing from other sources is quite common in Japan: I've seen characters similarly floored in early American newspaper strips.)

In other words, figuratively speaking, this guy has just had his candle blown out.

You know its surprising, seeing as its the only projected object emotion in the etire movie. Not a single enormous sweatdrop, sigh sign, or anything.....
