[MOD: please don't link to downloadable anime clips]
Um, in which case, wouldn't ANY link pointing to: http://www.animemusicvideos.org be unaceptable to post? I mean, come on, wake the fuck up and excercise some common sense, your stupidity is starting to peel the fucking paint. How about I throw in some Linkin Park in the background, would that make it okay, Sunshine? *shakes head*

This leaves the question, appropriate in the forum, what should the site's policies on linking to small clips of anime be? Currently, we certainly seem to allow screenshots and fan art; and we obviously allow small clips when accompanied by music.bum wrote:ya know, in a way he's right. i mean, as long as its only a small clip thats bein posted then i aint see the problem. i mean, ya might as well remove all links to amv's if your gona do that.

You'd need some sort of 'for display purpose only' ethics if you allowed clips that were not edited by an amv creator. That is the only difference after all - someone took the footage and edited it. Raw clips are taken directly from the anime, no editing involved, so they aren't the same as the footage seen in most amvs (excepting the ones where people show complete episodes and call it a purposely bad video
).
You would be putting the same faith in people that you do with vids - trust that they don't use the footage themselves. But again, raw clips are not the same as amvs - they are not taken out of context, they don't carry any theme found outside the anime, they have not been modified, no touch of an outside 'editing' presence. They are worse than fansubs - at least with fansubs someone edited the footage to add subtitles. With raw clips they are exactly that - direct rips from the anime being distributed online.
I don't really care much myself since I wouldn't download a clip even if they were allowed (dial-up and I'm not that curious). But maybe you can have people be forced to do it in VirtualDub with a "for preview purposes only" logo placed over the center of the clip. That would pretty much void anyone from using the clip in a video, and would make it no worse than the preview trailers on official dvd selling sites.

FYI: I'm not referring to episodes or substantial portions of them. Rather, short clips, say 15 seconds, posted for commentary purposes.
Currently, the rules allow you to take a screen capture and post a link to that; a 15-second MPEG isn't that much different.
[Let me stress that I haven't seen the clip that prompted this thread, so this discussion (for me) is fairly abstract.]

"raw clips" still have to be "edited" out of the footage. An AMV, unless you're doing frame by frame level editing (which most people don't) isn't really too much more than just a whole bunch of little clips taken from the raw footage and slapped together.Arigatomyna wrote:You'd need some sort of 'for display purpose only' ethics if you allowed clips that were not edited by an amv creator. If you REALLY wanted to try and find a distinction, it would be leaving off the original audio. But again, this all goes back to the very straight point that what we do is a form of pirating. Now many of you get all upset and cranky cause, *gasp*, heaven forbid you do something "illegal" and maybe your God will send to you hell or something...but the bottom line is that the lot of you are just kidding yourselves.
I'm feeling the urge to prove you stupid. Hey look everyone, it's a "raw" clip! You would be putting the same faith in people that you do with vids - trust that they don't use the footage themselves. ...you know except for the fact that I ripped it out of an AMV.

10 points to whomever can tell me WHICH AMV I cut it out of! And uh, besides the quality, there is no difference between that clip and the one in the original movie (except the clip has no audio).

Is it from Phade's Back to the Flying? If so, what are ten points redeemable for?Wheee_It's_Me! wrote:10 points to whomever can tell me WHICH AMV I cut it out of!
Anyway, I agree it is silly to disallow that clip only because you didn't put some Linkin Park music behind it.
Any suggestions for how to change the rules to allow things like that, but still disallow posting, e.g., full episodes.

It's from that one AMV "Learning To Fly"...I forget who the AMV artist is. Here's an idea though, how about have COMMON SENSE rules. Basically take it within the context. If someone is posting a 20 minute "clip" with the original audio...yeah, you should probably delete it. But if it's just some lil 10 second clip with no original audio...yeah, don't be stupid. Oh hey, we could call it the "Don't Be Stupid" rule. ^_^
Or the "Use Common Sense" rule, that works too.

You didn't prove me stupid. ^_^ You proved yourself anal. And you completely missed the point.Wheee_It's_Me! wrote:I'm feeling the urge to prove you stupid. Hey look everyone, it's a "raw" clip!
Wrong. The clip in the original movie is *in* the original movie. The clip you linked was taken from a second-hand illegally distributed source. It wasn't taken from the anime itself, so it is not a 'raw' clip. If you don't understand what I mean by the use of the word 'raw', I mean taken directly from the anime source, aka the dvd itself - not a second-hand distributed source (fansubs/bootlegs/amvs/downloaded episodes)....there is no difference between that clip and the one in the original movie (except the clip has no audio).
But again, that wasn't the point. I know you support it yourself, but the site does not want to promote the distribution of anime online. They've made a distinction where amvs are concerned. If they start allowing short 'raw' clips, how are they any different from the DBZ websites where you can download certain 'favorite' scenes free of subtitles and lacking audio? There is no difference - except we'd be doing it under the assumption (hope) that no one will collect those scenes for a video. That's the problem we have to address if you want to see the site allow 'raw' anime clips. How to keep it from being just another source for clean, albeit short, anime clips - most likely of the best scenes in the respective anime.
Right now they snuff out even a short anime clip - because once they start allowing them, they'll be no different from those other anime websites - distributing choice anime excerpts for whoever wants to download specific scenes.
[As I said in my first post, it's an ethical matter and the idea of keeping this website as an *amv* collection/distribution - not an online anime source.]
