Why doesn't my Local Downloads work??

Post by Gabbie00 » Tue Jun 22, 2004 1:37 pm

:?: Hello, I am a newbie though i have been downloading for sometime. I don't understand why my local downloads don't work. I have tried numerous times and i keep getting the same message. It tells me that the file program it was created in is unknown to my computer. I don't know if there is something i should have downloaded and didn't. Please if someone could help me??? :(

If you're saying that when you click on the video it doesn't play and gives you that message, you need the Gordian Knot Codec pack from doom9.org (link, click the download button on the left of your screen). If it is when you try to download the video, odds are you are using Internet Explorer and have it set to play in the browser. The easiest fix to that is to go to http://www.mozilla.org and download firefox. It is a new browser that I find quite useful. It will allow you to download the videos with no problem.

Are you 'right-clicking' and hitting 'save as' on the local links? You want to left-click once, and the download will start automatically. It will give you a pop-up to either play it or download it - download it to a folder on your comp. If you have any download accelerators installed, disable them (things like DAP).

If you *are* left-clicking the green local button, then cancel the box that pops up and wait a minute (some 60 seconds) till a link appears. Try downloading that (again, just left-click it, don't right-click it, and don't try to use a download accelerator).

You might also try clearing your cookies if you're using Internet Explorer. Log out of your account and close the page. Right-click your Internet Explorer Icon and go to properties. Click 'delete cookies,' click 'delete files,' click 'settings' and 'view files' and manually delete any cookies that remain. Open a new page and log back in - retry a local download.

If none of that helps, then you want to take the quick and easy way around the problem (instead of fixing it) and download a different browers. Opera works good - www.opera.com since it lets you resume local downloads.

All of this assumes that you've been a member for 2 weeks and you haven't defaulted on any pledges.

I am also a newb, and have the same problem as gabbie00. I have tried what Arigatomyna posted about all clicking, but I have MSN *sob* and don't know how to check if the download manager is setup correctly.

I am going to try to get Opera later, but if anybody has any other suggestions as to what might be causing this problem, please post a reply. Until then, I'm going to go cry in a corner somewhere.

Ahh, thank you oh wise one. Those threads really narrowed my problem down to one possibility... I need to get either opera or mozilla. Sorry, but I didn't even bother reading "thing 2", I figured my question was answered by the first "thing".

But, I have one more question...which is better, mozilla or opera?...Oh god I shouldn't have asked that. Now this string will go on FOR-EV-ER.

I really should ask: which one is easier to use?

I think the general consensus is that Firefox is better. Don't bother with full Mozilla unless you want a full suite.

Firefox huh? Sounds promising. Looks like I'm going googling. Thanx for the suggestion.
