New Guide Section Needs Submissions

Post by AbsoluteDestiny » Thu Jul 01, 2004 2:32 am

Hi All!

I'd like to include a section in the guides which would be a collections of Mini Guides where you can write about a subject you think will be useful to people making AMVs and this would be listed as 'MemberZ's thoughts on blahblahblah'

There are no limits to what could potentially be made into a mini guide but some examples would be things like How you did such-and-such an effect in video x or maybe tips on Improving your action sync... all kinds of stuff.

If you have something to say and you think it will help people make better videos then it could maybe be a mini guide.

Of course, it's my say as to whether something goes in and I not allow any mini guides to do things like point at videos that suck or write about things in a rude or abusive manner. The mini guides should all be friendly.

So, get writing them and send them to me - you can email me or send me them in a Private Message.

This probably doesn't count, but what if we make examples of what is considered a bad thing to do in a video, for the purpose of the guide, and link to them? That should be ok right?

My interpreation says that should not be a problem, so long as the errors are technical (bad synch, grainy video); taste variance would be a taboo topic ('I don't like **** band, so this video is a steaming pile of poo.').

Of course, most people realize later what their mistakes were. Getting written permission to link it would save everyone some heartache.

Only if the bad things are in your own videos. I'd consider it pretty bad form to have an org guide pointing and laughing at someone's video (even if it is in a constructive manner).

If someone were to write a guide like this - sharing common problems and mistakes with the inexperienced amv maker - he could always ask for volunteers. Then he'd have vids to link as examples, and he could put a little disclaimer explaining that all of the creators mentioned gave their permission. It would also broaden the scope, so you'd see all sorts of 'wish I'd known' examples. Something like that wouldn't just be helpful, it would be interesting to read. ^_^

If the guide author knows how to make the mistakes he/she is talking about (which he/she should!) then it shouldn't be that difficult to whip up a quick little clip just for example purposes. That way there's not need to link to "real" videos as all. Plus you can make the example 10 seconds (or about so) rather than 4-6 minutes, and it will likely demonstrate the concept more clearly.

Although AD and ErMaC did quite a fine job on the guides using only still images, so using actual video clips may not really be necessary at all in most cases. Plus this way (i.e. using only still images) it's easier to have a downloadable version that people can refer to offline.

Anyhow, that's just IMHO. :)

What I would most like to see are guides, or tutorials, that demonstrate how to do some of the more simple looking, though complex effects:
Specifically,
How to extract a character/image and composite it into a different scene. : Methods using Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, etc.

Maybe there could be a list of some of the more popular or frequently asked effects/tricks and then somebody could offer to write a guide for them.

In otherwords a masking guide. good idea. I plan to make one on how to use gimp and photoshop for just that purpose, using the Track-matte effect. It will have to be after AWA project though.
