My first vid is shot down!!

Post by Guld_Bowman_02 » Thu Jul 01, 2004 10:06 am

Hi guys!, I'm a newbie vid maker and I need some help. I just spent a week making what I thought was an AMV (lip sync/funny), only to find out that footage from movies like Shrek (which is waht I used) is considered NOT anime. I totally agree that Shrek or any animation like it is not in the same category as Ghost in the Shell or the like, but is that the only reason that videos using animation like that aren't allowed?.. I like to hear what everyone has to say b/c i'd really like to upload my video; but I also understand that rules need to be followed. (Guess i should have done more research... but there wil be others...)

Trust me when I say that you do *NOT* want to hear what everyone thinks about this. You might get your feelings hurt.

The short version would be something like this:

Fuck Shrek, it's not anime, not japanese, and this site wants nothing to do with it.

And after that you can insert any personal insults that you like.

Joykiller is just living up to his name.

As for the reasoning behind the strictness of the anime thing, in an ideal world I think people would love for this site to branch out into all forms of imagination. However, the main issue is the fact that the golden donut (the site's hosting) is NOT unlimited. Therefore limiting what can be uploaded to it to a specific focus on anime allows space to better be preserved.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

If I had a nickle for every time I've heard that.... I'd have at least 50 cents or so. :P

I'm not trying to be a dick, I was just letting him know that there are plenty of people here that will likely take the opportunity to vent.

I actually like Shrek, and I bet his video is actually good. He's not being retarded about his desire to have his video available to everyone (like several before him have been), but I doubt that will stop some from trying to piss all over him.

I'm not trying to 'kill his joy' though (har har), I'm just letting him know what to expect. If he starts acting like a four year old, then I might have reason to be a flaming dick to him, but so far, he's being quite rashional.

To expand a little further...

In Japan, 'Anime' does indeed mean any sort of animated entertainment...be it their own product or american (or other) cartoons or movies.

Here in the US, we limit the definition of 'anime' to Japanese products. And for reasons previously stated, limit server space to those AMVs made using japanese footage. You're free to provide your own server space for your own animated product and make a listing and still suffer the slings and arrows of those who don't share your opinion of what constitutes 'anime', but you would be morally right.

This just comes down to the golden rule - He who has the gold makes the rules. :D The powers that be have set their own rules on what can be uploaded to their servers. Like it or lump it. :!:

kitsunebeolnet is right. Anime is generally associated to Japanese animation instead of animation in general. (Try arguing this with my Korean anime artist friend ... he beans me about this argument all the time ... although, he is right that anime is the short-word for animation) ... I guess it's more of a pop culture thing.

I mean, when someone mentions anime, the first thing that would come up to someone's mind would either be Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon (or one of the multi-season animes that's been running for years). But if you mention cartoon, I'm sure you'll get a whole slew of shows that you'd run into your local television network, like Bugs Bunny and them.

So if you want to argue about the meaning of anime, I guess who you should really blame is pop culture in general.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.

there are online communities for non-anime fan-produced videos.
try www.fanflix.com or google around.

So if the .org was hosted and ran by someone in Japan, would we be able to upload any type of animated videos?

Castor Troy, that all depends on the rules that he/she sets up. Different person, different head of the house, different rules ... if he/she wants non-Japanese "anime" music videos on the server, then go right ahead. As far as today is concerned, only Japanese anime goes on the server (and maybe anime that could possibly pass off to look Japanese such as Chinese and Korean anime).
