Bote:
Really nice job with the particle generator.
Actually that can be done in AE (I haven't delved into particle generation too much yet) so im sure it Takes alot of work, as I'm sure it would in 3dsmax.

When using a 3D modeling/animation program to a 3D compositing program you're pretty much talking apples and oranges. I will agree though you can animate anything your heart desires in either one. but depending on what you're trying to animate. you would use different software.

I think what some people are missing is that sometimes the entire point of the video is effects. Those types of videos have a different appeal than romance/mood/story/whatever videos and should be judged differently. Just because a video doesn't focus on things you like doesn't mean the video is bad, it just means it's something you don't like. Saying effects videos suck becuase you wanted a video with a story is kinda like saying Saving Private Ryan sucks because you wanted to see Schindler's List. Fortunately some people recognize this and content themselves with just avoiding effects videos instead of bashing them all.

The biggest problem I see is when the creator is trying to make a certain type of video and uses some other element that distracts from that. Effects certainly can cause this type of problem but I've also seen it in something as simple as inserting a LONG fight sequence in middle of a romance video. The problem isn't that effects suck anymore than it's because fights suck, the problem is the creator wasn't able to focus on the main theme of their video.

That being said, I find myself getting bored by effects videos now. After making one myself and seeing all the DDR and Animix projects (incidently, these projects are much more imitated than Euphoria is) I'm rather sick of them.

Well I think thats the problem I personally see with effects videos, they aren't very different from others. Its damn near impossible now-a-days to find a new effect that hasn't been used and abused. Sure, they are pretty, they always are the first couple times you see them. I mean sheeeit, I've watch Euphoria a lot before because of how insanely original it was. Next, it was Die Another Day by Vicbond. Every now and then I'de see a new one, but the majority of effect I see now are those exact effects.

My point: If you are aiming to make your video all about the effects, my suggestion is to make sure your just not trying to copy other creators because trust me, it gets reaaal boring reaaaal quick. However, don't stop trying to copy them for the sake of learning, just don't expect to get a standing ovation for something thats already been seen.

And that isn't true of DBZ/Naruto fight videos, AMG/Final Fantasy romance videos, angsty Eva videos, etc? The problem is lack of originality and it isn't only a problem with effect vids.

Eh, it's not that hard. It just requires some thought, same as any other video. No matter what else I may think about my videos I can honestly claim I'm usually able to use effects in a way I haven't seen before.

I'd say this advise should apply to ANY type of video regardless of type. I don't want to see someone elses version of Senshi on Springer anymore than I want to see someone elses version of Euphoria.

Effects are cool, I would use more if I had a clue how AE worked.

I'm one of those newer creators that don't want to use that many effects. Mostly just enhancers, not flashy videos full of them. Heck, I might not even need After Effects.

In response to the question, I haven't really noticed that big of a trend towards the program myself. I might just be downloading videos that are all cuts and fades. Maybe a few overlays, but that's really all. I guess I haven't really been looking, though.

I was also at ANEXT, but I didn't notice very many videos that I thought looked heavily AE'd, other than jbone's "And That's That".

I still haven't touched the program myself -- straight Premiere and Photoshop. I always hear about how it has a really steep learning curve.

Effects videos can wow me if they're done right, yes... but if they don't have something more to them, I don't usually remember them very well. One reason I don't do them myself is that I can't think of new and original effects that I haven't already seen (sometimes I can't even think of old and unoriginal ones) -- I'm not very imaginative in that area. A video like "And That's That", with its layers upon layers, is something I never would have even thought to do.
