Once you settle in it's hard to get that back - you can do creative stuff but it's not quite the same. Some would argue that the mature stuff is better, and they'd often be right, but it doesn't have the same quality.
I think that you are so busy coming up with reason why you can't do better, that you aren't allowing yourself to progress.
For example:
A trumpet only has three valves. That is a total of 8 possible combinations of open and closed valves. Once I've 'mastered' opening and closing those valves in the given 8 positions, have I mastered the trumpet?
