Damage - (Something personal) - KareKano, David Sylvian

Post by Otohiko » Thu Jun 17, 2004 10:34 pm

Before you say anything, just note that this is a video I made pretty well completely for myself. I'm somewhat hesitant to release this one, though I will for completeness sake. I still don't think of it as very likeable.

By the way, it's not the 'Serious KareKano' vid I've been bragging about before - sadly, that one died conceptually. If anything though, this is KareKano, and it certainly is serious.

Anime: KareKano (aka. His and Her Circumstances)
Music: David Sylvian and Robert Fripp - Damage

(note - I find it somewhat awkward to have this video be the first David Sylvian on the .org - the artist is a musical genius deserving far more and better than this)

It's a pretty personal video - it came to me almost spontaneously, ex nihilo, and it took a lot of hard work to pull off. The result?

Well, it's essentially a video of mood, colour, landscape and contrast. I'd best describe it as very slow and very depressing and just plain strange.

The trouble is, the song is more like a poem with a minimal amount of musical texturism going on in the background. There's no real beat to work with, so I had to latch on to lyrics and harmony, and a few loose bass notes.

It was unique and challenging material to work with. I don't doubt it will make for unique, and alas - challenging/hard material to watch.

If you do, tell me if you thought any good of it.

I've always thought you as one of the better editors on here at matching mood and feel to the song in use. THis video is no diferent. Infact this to me is entirely a mood peice, and youve done an excellent job at captureing the mood of the song in your scene selections, your finely detailed timed overlays and fades, all seem to accentuate the mood and instruments of the song perfectly. Simple, yet magnificantly effective. Will I watch it alot? Probably not, It is quite slow, and not realy my kind of song to be putting on constant replay. But like a certain other video, It has alot of Artistic merit and some good editing worthy enough for everyone to download and at least watch once, if not keep.

Well, I just watched it, and you were right, it's very slow and depressing. However, when i go back and think about it, the song was very minimalistic and poetic. This is something the Japanese really excel at doing. They know how to take the most mundane things in life and turn them into something exquisite and beautiful. (this is also one of the reasons I personally watch anime) Karekano uses many of those things for instance, the cherry blossoms or the streetlights. It's definitely an artistic piece, but not something I could define as "entertaining." Good work overall.

I've come to expect great things from you and wasn't disappointed. This video really shows what "flow" means in AMVs. I enjoyed the overall feeling and mood of it very much. Touching, in one word.

You even managed to put in a lot of effects and still keep everything smooth and not look forced in any way. My personal favourite were the torn pieces of paper at 2:50.

Thanks, means a lot to me :)

(actually, I sort of had a tear show up in the corner of my eye after reading this, since I really thought people would be disappointed in this - I'm not lying  )

Thanks on the good technical comments. It was kind of... painful getting the scenes and fades right, but hey - at least they worked.

Song-wise - like I mentioned somewhere, it's something that spontaneously came up on me and I couldn't help but ride the strong impression I had of it. Thus the mood thing.

Hey, you should've seen me while I was editing it! 10am to 3am, baby :P Talk about Insomnia

Sylvian is a huge influence on me, at least his collab work with Fripp (sadly, haven't heard anything beyond that yet).
He's my favorite definitely my favorite lyricist (actually, he's tied with Cap'n B as my favorite lyricist, but that's beside the point). As some of you who go to Demonseal may know, I listen to 'The First Day' and 'Damage' religiously
Originally I was planning to use something more outward and fun, probably something off the early parts of 'First Day', but I couldn't think for anything with my sources - so, this came. Actually, when I thought of doing this mood piece for KareKano, I had the songs 'Damage', 'Every Colour You Are' and 'First Day' to choose from, but the latter two I thought of as too complex for me lyrically, so I went with this...

...umm, too much commenting, sorry.

Thanks also. That's one thing me and many anime artists have in common, the obsession with dramatic/artistic properties of ordinary landscapes, and sometimes not-so-ordinary landscapes.

I still want to make a pure 'landscape video', but I've never found a way to pull it off right.

Wow, now here's a flattering comment. I actually kept referring to Insomnia in later stages of editing to make sure it didn't completely put me to shame, especially in the video quality deparment. (I was still too lazy to do hand-tweaking images like you, but a large amount of smoothing filters at least saved me from total embarassment  ) So you actually deserve some credit for inspiring this yourself :)

As for effects - actually, I didn't list the video as having effects, but I guess there's kind of a debate as to what they are... I didn't put them as effects since I didn't use any outside software or source to create the things. And all they were is just a few color tweaks and overlays

Anyway, thanks again to everyone. The thread put me in a good mood which I've sort of lacked for a few days
