I agree with Mas Productions on the whole "balance" thing, but I really think what makes a good anime is the characters.

There has to be a love of the characters. To have that, there must be strong character development - For example, Yu Yu Hakusho or Naruto - the first season was (to me) kind of boring. Funny, but it was mainly an introduction of the main characters. The plot later on get's deeper, and much more interesting. And therefore, is great to watch because you know & love the characters.

The opposite would be (in my opinion,) Get Backers - the plot got "deep" too early into the series, and therefore you don't really care what happens to the main characters because you don't really know them. (Does that make sense?)

Anyways, these are the animes that I would recommend:

Naruto
Fruits Basket
Yu Yu Hakusho
Slayers
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Ranma 1/2

If you get around to watching them, you'll see why they're so popular.

Thanks for your time..
tentacles, a lack of cloths, leather, girls with questionable body parts poping out of their usual body part, that sort of stuff

Let's see, what am I into, Alternitive fantasy, Miliatry lifestyle, Detailed mechanical things (Mecha). Low fantasy. and a Good story.
I don't know your age but judging from your tastes I would suggest some military types. A one disc movie, Jin Rho, might do. It's a dark and often violent story of a young man torn between his military duty and a girl. Blue gender is a good SciFi military series, Earth overrun by bugs and man trying to reclaim it. Dai Guard, humorous giant robot series with a not so "state of the art" robot needed to save the world. Nadesico, super spaceship with a strange crew, lots of laughs. Escaflowne, excellent series, fantacy worlds and giant fighting suits. Trigun, scifi, western style, one of the best.

And welcome to another fan from the midwest. :D
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I think I may have seen Blue gender in the past. I seem to remember the soldiers doning a sort of power armor, or some sort of walker type "thing"

You should also try the Gundam series and Yu Yu Hakusho, which are on Saturdays on Cartoon Network.

I found the Gundam series horribly boring. And there are too many of them.

I'm a newbie to anime also. But I have seen some of the basics, Bebop, trigun, blue gender etc.

My personal favorite is Inuyasha, I'm usually kept interested by the characters. I love interesting characters.

So does anyone have any suggestions on stuff I should see?
yu yu Hakusho, and wolf rain are also some of my favs.
