Just saw first anime
Hi, people. a few days ago I saw my first Anime. It was a "Robotech episode. and well I kind of fell in love with the style of Anime. In the past I have been put off of Anime because of the "capture all of the monster type" Animes I see on the Fox channel.
Now I have a question. What in your opinion makes good Anime?
Thanks for your time..

If I must say one thing it would be balance. I enjoy series that have a good balance between love, comedy, action, and drama. I can't stand series that are too dis-proportionate. This gives me a chance to enjoy completely random anime and genius anime.

Welcome to the world of Anime.
My personal favs are
Kanon
I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs
Ah, My Goddess
Initial D
Azumanga Daioh and
Card Captor Sakura
Most people will swear by Dubs, others Subtitles, but it all depends on what you like. Fox isnt exactly the best place to get your supply of Anime. I hear people talking alot about Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network if you live in the states. Either way Enjoy.

Fox is evil. If you're interested in watching some quality anime, watch Bebop. Tis a classic (don't watch it tonight though, watch it tomorrow when it starts over again). I would suggest wolf's rain but you might be a bit lost.

Good anime - reasonable animation (doesn't have to be beautiful but it helps), appealing/likeable characters (this is a must, definately the biggest factor for me), action if any should preferably not resemble DBZ nor be really gross, unless it's a sort of comedy/parody show a plot really helps (especially one with some kind of closure at the end). Good music helps greatly, as does good voicing and subbing. I also like some corny stuff, but that's just me. I like shows which mix genres as well, especially if it's an action show it should have some comedy and/or romance mixed in, generally, to make it more interesting. Also, the best length for a series generally seems to be 2 seasons (52 episodes) or less; longer shows often get repetitive.
Specifically, I'd recommend Chobits and second the Cowboy Bebop recommendation. If you want more, I can say some, but it really depends what you're into.

ummm, appealing/likeable characters is one of the most important thing to me... Sense I have little to no language skills I also think good voicing and subbing is a must...
Bebop has a Bladerunner feel to it, Or is it just me.
Let's see, what am I into, Alternitive fantasy, Miliatry lifestyle, Detailed mechanical things (Mecha). Low fantasy. and a Good story.

Hmmm.... A good movie I can suggest with certainty is Escaflowne: The Movie. It's a bit gory at parts, but it's really good. Probably my favorite anime movie... which isn't saying much, since I have seen series, mostly. It's mecha and Fantasy. Weird mix, well done. I also recommend the manga. I haven't seen the series... and the series is further proof that fox is evil... They cut out the entire first episode o.oFall_From_Grace wrote:ummm, appealing/likeable characters is one of the most important thing to me... I remember Robotech from when I was 6-8 or something, it was good back then, and probably still is.
Another suggestion which might be a bit... heavy for a newbie is Evangelion, but you might be able to take it. It's my personal favorite anime, but it's really not for everyone.
