Well, I agree that most older anime isn't dubbed that greatly. But, presently companies and the people who produce anime for us in the US (or wherever you might be living) have been doing a darn good job of dubbing anime. They're paying attention obviously to the details to synchronize the voice actors/actresses voices to the mouth flaps of the anime.Pyle wrote:

That's about the same way I feel. They just feel . . . wrong. And Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are done quite excellently, and are probably the best dubs that I can think of as well. The biggest reason I dislike dubs is how... off... they feel.
Early dubs had the problems of bad voice actors and poor translations, both of which have improved light-years since only a few years ago.
The more recent dubs have slightly different problems. Because the emphasis recently has been on matching lip flap exactly, the rhythm and cadence of the speech has been utterly shot. The resulting dialogue sounds very stiff, emotionless, and stilted to me.
There have been very few dubs that I've seen that manage to replicate the emotion and cadence that the Japanese audio tracks have. (Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are the ones that come readily to mind.)
Because of my desire to hear a natural rhythm to the characters speaking, I stick to subtitles.
I prefer to watch the animation rather than having to read the lines. I agree that some dubs have been poorly done but they are improving. 
I met three voice actor, and actresses, 
at a con and learned the difficulties they have. It is very hard to make a dub work and look convincing. I'm very happy that dvd allows us to have the origional with sub and a english dub on the same disc.
