If not, maybe he would accept donations for a limited hosting of these sort of videos - where it would be available for so many downloads until the amount donated is used up, and then replaced by a smaller version. I know I'd be willing to donate to a specific cause like this, and I'm sure the people who helped make the multi-group projects would be willing to add a bit to help for it.

But really, if you consider these multi-editor projects, they're dozens of videos packed into one. If they were uploaded separately, a video with 12 mini-vids would get up to 1200 mbs of hosting space free off the donut, no questions asked. Asking for a single video combining them to get say...200 mbs isn't strange - not when it's actually a combination of many videos that could take up a lot more space if they were hosted individually.

Either way, it's a great idea that I'm sure could be worked out one way or another - I'd much rather download a single 200mb vid than a dozen 50mbs vids, even if it means chipping in a bit here or there for a month of hosting before the low quality version replaces it.

Yeah, I didn't even think of those. I was thinking more along the lines of Mission Improbable projects, where it's just one really long song and each person gets a certain part. But I think for projects like the NES Project, extended space should definitely be allocated. Although, as of now, the NES Project is only available by getting the seperate videos. And I don't think all those are uploaded. I still haven't seen the whole project. ;_;

You should have taken part in the wmm contest - the 'second' prize was a dvd of the NES project. ;p I haven't watched it yet, but the case says it's 81 minutes of amv splendor.

But that's probably a high quality version at 640x480 (or even 720x480) - cut the aspect ratio in half and add a few filters and you could get the vid at a solid 350mbs with pretty good quality (for a downloaded video this big). I don't see why the org couldn't host something like that.

But yeah, I was thinking about the projects where they have a minute or so per creator - if those were hosted separately, they could (theoretically) take up 100mbs for that 1 minute video - 100 mbs per vid free off local. A multi-editor project asking for 200 mbs doesn't seem like much when you look at it as many people's mini-vids being hosted as one instead of separately.

I certainly hope you wouldn't cut the aspect ratio in half. It's possible but you wouldn't reduce the image size any :P

Terminology aside, there's a limit to how far you can compress certain things and maintain acceptable image quality. The DDR3 XviD encode, for example, is just over an hour long, and is 680-ish MB at 480x352, which is just a little larger than VCD resolution. It doesn't look too terrible, but at the same time, it's not that good, either. I can't imagine that you'd be able to maintain the same level of image quality and half the size of the thing, even with aggressive filtering.

On the subject of filtering: Cleaning up multi-editor projects that use various anime is a huge pain in the ass, as it's incredibly rare that any two sources will look fine with the same filter chain. You might get away with some basic stuff such as denoisers, but that won't slash your filesize in half.

Anyway, on the subject:

It'd be nice to be able to host the larger multi-editor projects on the Donut, but I think we'd need many more donations for that.

Don't even get her started on aspect ratio. :P

Well, you wouldn't want to halve the aspect ratio. I mean, you wouldn't want to turn NTSC 4:3 material into 2:3 :P

I'm well aware of that. :?
