would it be legal to play some of this stuff on tv?

Post by salemustbedestroyed » Sat May 29, 2004 2:02 am

hey. im a producer at my local public access tv station in salem,OR. and i was kinda thinking of asking some of the guys who make these videos if they would be alright with me making a pubic access show that played some of this cool stuff. anyway i was wondering what you guys think the legality of it all would be?, what with some record label owning copyrights to the music, and another company having copyrights on the video chips. it would all be completely non profit of course, and i would have to get permisson from the guy who made the video, but other then that stuff, im not really sure what i would have to do to keep it all legit?what do you guys think?javascript:emoticon(':?:')

You'd have to negotiate, pay, and perhaps give oral sex. The oral sex is for your "pubic access" show.

Oh wait, you probably meant "public". Erm.

Well, you'd have to clear the broadcast rights with all relevant parties. You'd have to negotiate with at least the record labels (who may not be based in the U.S.; for example, if you wanted to broadcast an AMV with Ayumi Hamasaki music, you'd be speaking to avex trax) and the U.S. anime distributors. Most likely, they'd point you back to the Japanese animation studios and Japanese media conglomerates.

Here's one thing you could do: Since I don't think you want to take the legal route, just go ahead and show the AMV. Nobody pays attention to Oregon anyway, and if by some freak chance the shit hits the fan and crackdowns start to occur, at least you'll have given a small portion of us the right to laugh and gloat "HAHAHA I TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN".

well to be fair that was pritty funny. thanks for the info though.yeah i figured to make it all legit it would be a big pain. probably won't end up doing that because of thelegal stuff, not so much cause of the law, but if something did happen i might get baned from the station.

Could the assholes above this post get there shit together! A TV producer has seen some of the stuff on this site and thinks it's good enough for TV! Many people would break their own arm for something like this! So how about we all take this more seriously.

to actually answer your question sale... From what I know, It's perfectly legal for you to play amv's on a public access tv station because you aren't doing it for commercial purposes. public access station's make you sign the contract so you and so they can't get sued either. I only know this because i was helping animeeigo? i can't remember the name, when they were playing amvs on a san francisco public access station.

so go for it.

It's not so much "is this stuff good enough for TV", it's more like "this is what you have to do if you want to stay legal".

Being inconspicuous and being legal do not necessarily go hand-in-hand.

Wait a sec legal...

Smartripper is a germen dvdripper illegal in the USA
There are people here (Hell.. me included) who
use obviously bootleg verisons of the nessarcy programs.
Plus most people get thier MP3's from limewire ,not ripping
CDs with software and people are worrying about the legality
of showing AMVs on Public Access . Don't worry about it,
there's a station in Austin Texas Called AMVTV that does this
every week. Oh, by-the-way the names Brian from Off-Center Productions feel free to use whatever you want. I Also, got a messge
for the people who are about to say I own everything legit...
Good for you, now go-home to the good life :)

"if you know someone who is pirating software or using illegal software, please call 1-800-NO-PIRACY."

Me and all my friends and comp servicing class laughed our asess off when we heard that.

Who's gonna report people anyways? If you report it, then most likely, they're gonna catch you.

Basically, if you do it and want to squal on someone else, you better think that they could turn you in also, so it's just better not to do it in the first place, lol
