It really depends on the motivation behind the video. If you want to do it because you think the idea is really good and you want the challenge of making a video of that length, then by all means make it. After all, if that's your motivation it doesn't matter one jot what anyone else thinks.

If you're doing it mainly so people will watch it and think, "wow, that was great, the creator must be a genius!" then unless you really are a genius, you'd be better off not making it.

Definately try it, I made a video once (lost the source song now, will remake it one day) and it was 7 mins 45. It always amazes me when I watch it, it only feels like 3 mins.

I may sound big headed, but when you're video seems shorter than it is, then I think you've done a good job

just make the video. There are plenty of 7-8 minute videos out there. Personally, I don't think watching lego people kill each other has 11 min of interest though. Maybe 10, it there is lots of blood.
Have fun trying to compress it so it looks good, and still has a decent file size though.

What songs?

I say go for it if you can pull it off.

Remember scene changes + effects = entertainment.

If its fast use tons of cut scenes.

It will be hard, but try to time different things to different instruments. I.e scene change to bass guitar, effect to electric, different effect to drum. (Just an utterly random example) Keep repeated notes in mind with effects and transitions.

I think it could kick ass myself. Then again I like a lot of Metal so longer songs come with the territory. Metallica - Master of Puppets 8:30 or so, etc.

By the way it wouldn't happen to be a combination of the orchestrated songs Ecstacy of Gold and The Call of Ktulu would it?

(Of course that would be more like 12min, unless you trim out some of the cheering.)

Actually, it's a pair of techno-ish video game tracks that go together.

Well, come on, look at my profile. Would I ever use anything other than VGM?

Ignore the fact that I have Premiere open with my current Tool video as I type this.

11 minutes, eh? If you can make it interesting enough to sit through and not bore the audience with over time, sure. Go for it.

You mean I should drop my video idea for Emerson Lake Palmer's - Pictures at an Exhibition? You don't know how hard it is to find 40 minutes of interesting clips from Fusigi Yugi! Beside compressing it to 50 megs really would mess up the quality.

I think if you have a great idea, go for it. 8) If you try and it works, great, if it doesn't work, you move on. If you don't try, you always wonder if you could have done it. :(
I'd love to see how it turns out.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Some of you are being a bit close-minded.

of course you can make a 11 minute video. It may be more difficult but it really depends on the type of video. If you are making a mindless action video then it probably will not work. Action videos can be long, look at "Bleed the Sky" by Tsukin, but six minutes is probably as long as you would want to take it and that worked only because of the large dynamic contrast between the different sections. (I'd have to here the song, but this might be a problem for a techno piece, they are often repetitive.)

Your better of trying to make a plot for the video, aren't movies hours long? What about Fantasia? Those music videos were 10-15 minutes on average. It needs to have more depth than your average video to hold attention, it's like the difference between a short story and a novel. You have much more freedom to develop different aspects of your idea and to construct different scenes.

I agree with the person who said that the test of a long video is that it feels short. The first time I saw "The Wasteland" I thought it seemed like it ended really soon (it's 7 minutes.)

The reason people are wary of long videos is that they are often made with little editing. Hey if someone is going to rip an episode of DBZ and make a music video using 10-20 second clips, why not make it 25 minutes? You don't need to go crazy with the cuts but make sure it fits the music and doesn't have a lot of long clips. Footage isn't as much of a problem as you might think as long as you aren't trying to do something too specific (I'm finishing a 7 minute video to a 45 minute movie.)

Instrumental videos are naturally longer, putting in titles can help a lot. Giving the footage a unique look using filters or brightness/contrast can make the source look different from the original and help when you have longer cuts so the audience doesn't feel like they are watching the anime.

Just run with it.

I made an 11 minute music video. It's availible for download. It's also a bit of a trainwreck. Looking back on it there's a lot of things I'd have done differently, and and probably spent a lot more effort on certain things.

Not sure if any of this will help, but what I think I learnt from making a long.
1) Story's the most important part on a video of this length. You have to keep people interested.
2) You're probably gonna have to use slow segments, but make sure they're entertaining. Put as much effort into them as the crechendoes. I didn't :\
3) Get a lot of feedback on the video from other people. Did they understand the story, did they get bored, etc?

I failed on most of those parts lol. (But I + a few fans of the track like it anyway >_<)
